The selected article for this presentation is a systematic review done by Morin et al. (2017)Addictive Disorders Assignment Discussion.
The review was aimed at determining the best treatment for substance use disorders.
It specifically analyzed the usefulness and efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT.
The article clearly provides evidence that a number of CBT approaches exist.
Each of the CBT approaches is suitable for a particular demographic of the substance use disorder client.
The population under consideration in the review by the authors in the chosen article are drug and alcohol users.
The researchers specifically looked at adolescents aged 13-19 years old and adults between the ages of 45-64 years.
In the population studied, it became apparent that SUD is the mental health condition that mostly co-exists with other mental disorders such as depression (APA, 2013)Addictive Disorders Assignment Discussion.
The specific intervention that was used in the chosen article was CBT.
However, the authors give a detailed account of the different forms of CBT that exist.
These diverse approaches to CBT include relapse prevention community reinforcement approach (CRA) guided self-change (GSC), and Mindful-based relapse prevention (MBRP) amongst others (Corey, 2017; Morin et al., 2017).
All CBT approaches use thought restructuring as a therapeutic strategy. This is often referred to as cognitive remodeling or cognitive restructuring (Wheeler, 2020)Addictive Disorders Assignment Discussion.
CBT cab either be done to an individual patient or to a group of patients.
CBT sessions for groups of SUD patients usually has between 6 and 8 clients and the sessions are conducted once per week for up to 12 weeks.
The claims of the author are both explicit and implicit.
It is that CBT is an empirically supported treatment (EST) for SUDs that is effective and efficient.
Also, group therapy enables the client to benefit from Irvin Yalom’s curative factors that include universality, catharsis, interpersonal learning, instillation of hope, existential factors, altruism, and imitative behavior amongst others (Hauber et al., 2019)Addictive Disorders Assignment Discussion.
The best CBT approach for SUDS is relapse prevention (RP).
It is clinically best practice to combine psychotherapy (CBT) with pharmacotherapy when treating patients with SUDs.
Since RP is the approach that the authors found to be best suited for SUDS, its use leads to the best remission of all the rest.
Guided self-change or GSC was found to benefit most those clients with mild SUD who are still functional to some extent.
For those patients with marked social and occupational dysfunction, the authors found that they would benefit most from community reinforcement approach or CRA.
Last but not least, in the event that there are couples or partners who are having addiction problems, the best approach for them is that of behavioral couples’ therapy or BCT.

The study by Morin et al. (2017) does not show evidence of significant limitations.
Whatever limitations may be present in the study, they certainly do not affect the reliability and validity of the study findings.
The study’s findings are therefore generalizable and can be used to influence a change in clinical practice.
Because of the above, the study adds to the body of knowledge for evidence-based practice or EBP Addictive Disorders Assignment Discussion
