Confidentiality is really important in social work and therapy. It means keeping what a client says in therapy private. This helps clients feel safe to talk about their personal problems. When clients know their secrets won’t be shared, they’re more likely to be honest, which makes therapy more effective (National Association of Social Workers, 2021). The relationship between a therapist and a client works best when there’s trust. If clients are worried that their information might get out, they might not share everything they need to, which can make therapy less helpful (Reamer, 2016).

But, there are times when confidentiality has to be broken. For example, if a therapist thinks that someone is in danger or being abused, they must report it to the authorities. This is called mandated reporting. Even though this might seem like a breach of confidentiality, it is essential for keeping people safe, especially if they’re in a dangerous situation, like a child being abused. Mandated reporting helps make sure that these problems are addressed and that people get the protection they need (Reamer, 2016).

In summary, keeping what clients say in therapy private helps build trust and makes therapy more effective. However, sometimes it’s necessary to report certain information to protect people from harm. Both confidentiality and mandated reporting are crucial for effective and ethical social work (National Association of Social Workers, 2021; Reamer, 2016).
