Population Health Problem Overview

Hi class, I choose child abuse as a population health problem, for this week’s discussion. It is a public health issue in the United States and New York state. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identifies child abuse and neglect as problems with long-term effects on individual health, well-being, and opportunity. It encompasses all kinds of abuse on children aged 18 years and below. Abusers can be parents, caregivers, and custodians (religious leaders, teachers, and coaches). The different types of child abuse include sexual, physical, neglect, and emotional. The issue is prevalent in the United States. CDC reported that 1 in 7 children experience child abuse. However, the number could be higher because most cases are unreported. In 2020, 1750 children died from child abuse causes (CDC, 2022).  There were 56760  reported and investigated child maltreatment cases in 2021 in New York.  Also, in the same year, the state recorded 126 related fatalities (Administration for Children and Families, n. d.)Child Abuse And Neglect As Health Problem Discussion. These statistics indicate the prevalence of child abuse in New York and the need for intervention.

Overview of Child Abuse Prevention Agency

The issue of child abuse has attracted the attention of governmental and non-governmental organizations in New York.  Amongst agencies advocating against child abuse and managing related cases is the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty Against Children (NYSPCC). The organization engages in prevention activities to curb the vice of child abuse and neglect. It also offers a platform for professionals, parents, and the public to report child abuse cases. Reported cases are investigated, after which the victims are provided with health and legal assistance. NYSPCC also trains professionals on best practices for handling child abuse cases. NYSPCC has also engaged in the making of child protection laws.  The organization plays a significant role in controlling child abuse in New York by enabling parents, professionals, and other agencies to manage the problem expeditiously Child Abuse And Neglect As Health Problem Discussion.

Ways the Community Health Nurse Could Collaborate with the Agency

A community health nurse could collaborate with the NYSPCC to ensure cases of child maltreatment are reported and addressed. Public health nurses are required to prevent, identify, and respond to suspected child abuse (Jack et al., 2021).  Collaborating with available non-profit agencies, such as NYSPCC, community health nurses can intensify the prevention of child abuse. They can also train in best practices for recognizing and reporting cases to relevant authorities. Also, the nurses can help the organization draft policies for improving services for victims of child abuse.
