This unit covers essential aspects of providing and supporting learning within an organisation. It considers how learning and development connects with different areas of the organisation and how, in doing so, it drives individual and organisational performance. The unit goes on to explore the stages of learning programme design, development and facilitation as well as considering how alternative, and more informal, approaches to learning can be supported.
Task One – Written Responses to Questions
This task seeks to assess your knowledge and understanding of learning and development.
To complete the task, you should provide a written response to each of the questions below, ensuring that your responses are clearly linked to the questions and, overall, are within the stipulated word count (see below).
Remember that, at this level, it is important that you make appropriate use of wider (academic) reading as well as practical examples, to expand your responses and illustrate key points in your answers.
Questions
1. The provision of learning and development (L&D) in organisations is constantly changing in response to events and developments in the wider world. With reference to your own organisation or one you are familiar with, discuss two themes that, in your opinion, are currently shaping the provision of L&D. (AC 1.1)
2. Making use of the same organisation as in Question 1, explain two ways that L&D connects with other area(s) of the organisation to support the achievement of business goals and objectives. (AC 1.2)
3. Evaluate what you consider to be the strengths and weaknesses of the following methods of identifying L&D needs:
- Desk analysis of an organisation’s ‘business’ results and objectives
- A survey issued to a team or department
- A one-to-one interview with an individual at work (AC 1.3)
4. With reference to two examples (real or hypothetical) discuss how different learning methods can be blended to form engaging learning and development solutions. For each of your examples, explain why you consider that particular blend of methods forms an effective and engaging experience for learners. (AC 2.1)
5. Explain what is meant by the term ‘transfer of learning to the workplace’, why it is important and two strategies that can be employed to help achieve it. Where possible you should select strategies that you have personally seen to be effective. (AC 2.2)
6. With consideration of the pitfalls of leaving thoughts of evaluation and impact assessment until after L&D has taken place, assess why these must be considered at the design stage. (AC 2.3)
7. Discuss two techniques that can be used when facilitating learning in groups and how you would use these to help enhance learner engagement. (AC 3.1)
8. With reference to your own experience of learning, evaluate how online facilitation differs from face-to-face facilitation for both learner and (AC 3.2)
9. Much of the learning that takes place in an organisation is informal and often self-directed. Both of these forms of learning bring risks and benefits for both the organisation and the individual learners involved. Assess what these risks and benefits might be for both organisation and individual learner. (AC 4.1)
10. Recommend one step that learning professionals can take to encourage informal learning in organisations and one step they can take to help individuals to manage their own learning (AC 4.2)
