During my practicum, I have had the opportunity to develop a variety of clinical skills. Based on my self-assessment, I have identified areas where I feel confident and those that require further development.
Confident Skills
I am confident in performing and interpreting chest X-rays, inhalation therapy, and rapid strep tests. Additionally, I have successfully performed ophthalmic and otoscopic examinations, wound care, PPD readings, and rapid influenza testing independently. I am also proficient in conducting EKGs, obtaining vaginal cultures, and performing Pap smears (Nolden, 2022). These skills have been reinforced through repeated practice and supervision during my practicum, leading to my confidence in performing them independently.
Mostly Confident Skills
There are several procedures where I feel mostly confident but still benefit from supervision. These include interpreting laboratory/diagnostic tests, contraceptive planning, and performing HARK screenings (Lei et al., 2022). I have practiced these skills under supervision, and with continued experience, I aim to achieve full confidence in these areas.
Beginning Skills and New Skills
Certain procedures, such as performing pulmonary function tests, interpreting peak flow meter measurements, and urodynamic studies, are areas where I have performed with supervision but still require more practice to feel confident (Perry et al., 2021). These are complex procedures that necessitate a deeper understanding and more hands-on experience. Clinical Skills and Procedures Self-Assessment Essay
Some skills, such as haemorrhoid excision of thrombus and local/field block for anesthesia, are new to me. I have not had the opportunity to perform these during my practicum, and they represent areas for future growth.
Accomplished Goals
I have accomplished my goals related to mastering basic diagnostic tests, improving my competence in common clinical procedures, and enhancing my patient interaction skills (Kwame et al., 2019). These accomplishments have been pivotal in building my confidence and proficiency in the clinical setting.
Unaccomplished Goals
Despite my progress, I did not fully achieve my goals related to pulmonary function tests and peak flow meter interpretation (Børsting et al., 2020). To continue working on these skills, I plan to seek additional training opportunities and practical experience after completing my program. Engaging in workshops, seeking mentorship, and practicing in a clinical setting will be essential for my growth in these areas. Clinical Skills and Procedures Self-Assessment Essay
