Mission Statement and Reflection

A Professional Mission Statement

Nursing is one of the professions with the most significant impact on an individual’s well-being and community health. Therefore, my strong desire to promote individuals’ and communities’ health triggered me to venture into the nursing field. As a nurse, I would use my knowledge, experience, and skills to prevent and manage lifestyle and chronic illnesses, reducing disease burden and mortality rates in society. However, I must focus on career growth to meet the community’s healthcare needs. Professional continuing education and practicing in related settings are the backbone of career growth in nursing (Potter et al., 2021). Therefore, my career goals involve completing my undergraduate nursing program and later enrolling in an MSN program. These programs will equip me with the knowledge, competence, and experience needed to meet the healthcare needs of the local society. Additionally, I intend to start my trauma center after completing my MSN program and obtaining licensure as an advanced nurse practitioner in the next five years. Practicing independently will enhance my ability to address trauma among community members with a history of trauma, improving their overall health outcomes and quality of life.

Professional Summary

Specific Artifacts

Several types of written work were completed during the program to enhance understanding of significant course concepts. First, I completed a community and population health needs assessment assignment. This task equipped me with the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate the healthcare needs of community members that must be addressed to improve health outcomes and quality of life. Secondly, I completed professional roles and values tasks. This assignment enabled me to reflect on essential skills required in the four significant nursing areas. Therefore, the skills and knowledge acquired while completing this task enhanced my ability to provide high-quality, safe, and evidence-based (EB) patient care in my practice as a registered nurse (RN). Furthermore, I completed “Evidence-Based Practice and Applied Nursing Research” based on the problem of interest. This task prepared me to resolve gaps in the clinical practice and meet the community’s healthcare needs through research and evidence-based practice (EBP), the best medical across various clinical settings (Hoffmann et al., 2023)Evidence-Based Practice Across The Health Professions Assignment Paper.

Professional Strengths Depicted in the Artifacts

Written tasks completed during the program demonstrated my professional strength. First, resolving clinical problems based on the PICOT question depicted my strength in clinical inquiry research. As a registered nurse, these skills will enable me to resolve various health-related issues by translating data gathered during clinical research into EB interventions. Hoffmann et al. (2023) reported the effectiveness of EB interventions in improving outcomes in various healthcare settings. Therefore, incorporating my research and EBP skills into my clinical practice will improve the population’s health outcomes, well-being, and quality of life significantly.

Challenges Encountered during the Program

The most significant challenge was meeting the deadline for assignment submission. I am currently working as a charge nurse in a busy level 1 trauma center post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). This work environment is characterized by tension and a relatively high degree of work-related distress and burnout. Therefore, it was challenging to submit assignments within the set deadline, especially in weeks when the patient flow at the medical facility was significantly high due to work-related fatigue and burnout (Yestiana et al., 2019)Evidence-Based Practice Across The Health Professions Assignment Paper. I overcame this challenge by calling my nursing supervisor to come to PACU so that I could step off the floor for a while and complete my assignment. I could also work overnight in cases when my supervisor could not step in at the PACU to ensure my assignments were submitted within the deadline. Therefore, my dedication and commitment contributed to the successful completion of my program despite the challenges.

How did the Coursework Contribute to the Achievement of the Nine Nursing Program Outcomes?

The coursework contributed to the achievement of the program outcomes. First, completing various written tasks and participating in discussion groups during the program contributed to the achievement of program outcomes regarding communicating effectively in various modes. Secondly, conducting community health needs assessment and formulating effective EB interventions enhanced the use of clinical reasoning to improve the quality and nursing care based on the code of ethics and the best available evidence. Thirdly, completing an introduction to patient safety improved the learners’ accountability in enhancing efficiency, safety, and quality of patient care. Furthermore, assessing organizational and population needs and conducting a literature search based on the PICOT question improved learners’ ability to collect and synthesize nursing-related empirical and theoretical knowledge.

Additionally, working with individuals and community members with various medical conditions during the program led to the achievement of program outcomes about providing patient-‐centered care and compassionate care to individuals and families. Moreover, completing the assignment regarding applied leadership led to the achievement of the learning outcome involving creating a healing environment through leadership and education skills. Working with other students during group work enhanced learners’ collaborative skills, a significant course outcome. Studies show the efficacy of a collaborative approach in achieving optimal patient clinical outcomes (Mohamad et al., 2023)Evidence-Based Practice Across The Health Professions Assignment Paper. Besides, dealing with hereditary and genetic diseases during the program enhanced learners’ ability to incorporate genetics and genomics knowledge into their clinical practice. Lastly, using various technology devices during the program contributed to the achievement of the course outcomes regarding the effective use of information technology to mitigate medical errors, communicate, and make significant clinical decisions.

Fulfilling Nursing Roles during the Program

Scientist: Scientific knowledge and interventions are essential in nursing practice. As an undergraduate nurse, I combined clinical imagination with nursing science to detect expected changes in the community’s health patterns. I then formulated interventions based on scientific knowledge to control the condition, preventing adverse health outcomes, including high disease burden and increased mortality rates.

Detective: Nurses’ role as detectives impact clinical outcomes positively. As an undergraduate nurse student, I nurse participated in scientific inquiry. Scientific-based data collected during the scientific inquiry was incorporated into significant clinical decisions. Additionally, this data was translated into EBP and implemented as an EB intervention to enhance the clinical practice and quality of care.

The healing environment manager: Creating a healing environment is a worldwide goal. It involves providing finance and introducing healthcare policies and regulations. As a nurse student, I advocated for the creation of a conducive healthcare environment and coordination among interdisciplinary team members to promote optimal clinical outcomes and create a positive patient experience (Mohamad et al., 2023).

Professional Growth Achieved during the Nursing Program

The program led to significant professional growth. First, achieving course outcomes led to essential knowledge, competence, and skills. Therefore, as a registered nurse, I will use these competencies to provide high-quality and safe care to my patients in the clinical setting. Secondly, working with my colleagues and supervisors during the program enhanced my collaborative skills. Thus, I will incorporate a collaborative approach into my clinical practice, resulting in optimal health outcomes (Mohamad et al., 2023)Evidence-Based Practice Across The Health Professions Assignment Paper. Furthermore, assessing the population’s and organizational needs and conducting clinical inquiry enhanced my research and evidence-based skills. As an RN, I will use these skills to identify a particular organizational problem of concern and address it through clinical inquiry, creating a healing environment that will result in positive health outcomes.

Quality and Safety

Definition of Quality and Safety

My understanding of the quality and safety of patient care changed through professional roles and values. I perceived quality and safety as significant features of patient care, which entails providing compassionate and competent care. However, my definition of quality and safety changed during the program. I learned that quality and safety are significant indicators in the nursing profession (Ovčina et al., 2019)Evidence-Based Practice Across The Health Professions Assignment Paper. This definition was informed by the “Professional Roles and Values” Artifact. Additionally, I learned that the provider and recipient’s safety and quality are considered in evaluating the performance of the entire healthcare organization or a specific unit. Quality or safety issues mainly emerge from system failures in various clinical settings. Very few cases of safety and quality issues result from human errors. Therefore, departmental or organizational leaders should focus on understanding and resolving system failures contributing to quality and safety issues to adhere to quality and safety standards.

Professional values and roles assignment developed the definition of quality and safety as applied in the nursing field. The task presented safety and quality as part of nursing practice. Additionally, completing the “Introduction to Patient Safety” and “Evidence-Based Practice and Applied Nursing Research” enhanced my understanding of quality and safety. Therefore, I can integrate safety and quality knowledge into my clinical practice at the PACU to improve health outcomes and quality of life.

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Certificate Significant on the Future Nurse Role

The IHI Certification will impact my future role as a registered nurse significantly. This certification enhances continuous learning in clinical areas, including patient safety, healthcare improvement methods, and the best quality improvement efforts (Mendoza et al., 2023). Therefore, as a registered nurse, I will incorporate evidence-based practice knowledge and skills acquired during the program into my role as a registered nurse to improve the quality and safety of care and overall health outcomes.

Evidence-Based Practice

EBP Definition

Professional roles and values changed my definition and understanding of EBP. Before the program, I perceived EBP as the most commonly used care approach. However, my definition of EBP was changed by professional roles and values. Currently, I perceive EBP as the best practice for achieving optimal patient clinical outcomes. As a result, I educated my team about early ambulation as an effective and best EBP for patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) (Bulut & Vatansever, 2022)Evidence-Based Practice Across The Health Professions Assignment Paper. Additionally, I utilized EBP knowledge to reduce pain and improve outcomes in deep vein thrombosis patient outcomes undergoing early ambulation. Lastly, I collaborated with physical therapists to train staff about providing post-operative psychological support to THA patients and their families to achieve optimal and holistic health outcomes.

The program, in particular completion of professional values and roles task, developed my definition of EBP. This artifact presented EBP as the best medical procedure in a particular nursing area. Therefore, nurses should focus on integrating EBP into their clinical practice to achieve better health outcomes and organizational positive growth. Additionally, the definition was supported by the artifact regarding problem assessment and clinical inquiry. This task indicated that the implementation of EBP in clinical settings is triggered by a current population or organizational problem that must be resolved to improve health outcomes. Nurses conduct a clinical inquiry to gather essential clinical data, which is translated into EBP intervention and implemented in the affected unit or the entire medical facility, facilitating positive growth.

Understanding of EBP and Applied Nursing Research

I evaluate current primary data and applied concepts acquired during the literature review in my nursing practice. Phrases, such as early ambulation in total hip arthroplasty (THA), were used during the literature search to ensure the relevancy and believability of collected data. First, Quality improvement (QI) and research differ in terms of places and uses. QI involves systematically incorporating best interventions into the local practice to improve patient care (Comfere et al., 2020)Evidence-Based Practice Across The Health Professions Assignment Paper. On the other hand, research involves using a systematic approach to discover new concepts or solutions in healthcare settings.

Additionally, primary and secondary resources and researchers differ. Primary sources document data collected during study or intervention. Primary research enables nurse scholars and other healthcare providers to conduct clinical trial or test a particular proposed approach to assess its efficacy in improving a specific problem. On the contrary, secondary research entails gathering evidence from existing data. Authors analyze, report, or interpret data generated by other researchers and present it in secondary sources. Secondary research enables clinicians to review and interpret existing data related to a particular clinical problem, resulting in the most effective practice change. Experience acquired while addressing various individual or population health problem during the program improved my EBP knowledge and skills, the foundation of safe, efficient, and quality care (Hoffmann, et al., 2023). Therefore, as a RN, I will apply these EBP skills in my clinical practice to improve the quality of care and health outcomes.

Applied Leadership

Applied Leadership Definition

My applied leadership definition was significantly influenced by professional roles and values. The program presented applied leadership as nurse’s ability to demonstrate superior and effective leadership qualities in a specific situation. For instance, a nurse can apply leadership skills to resolve conflict between two colleagues, creating a conducive working environment. The artifact supporting this definition is the professional roles and values, which presents effective applied leadership skills as the nurse leader’s ability to change according to the current situation that requires improvement. Evidence-Based Practice Across The Health Professions Assignment Paper

Learning Leadership Experience

In professional collaboration, interdisciplinary members work together to achieve the shared vision and organizational goals. The team members focus on assisting each other to succeed as a group. According to Wei et al. (2019), collaboration among healthcare professionals results in effective, safe, and efficient patient care. Additionally, professional collaboration results in effective nursing leadership. The interprofessional members focus on creating a supportive and conducive working environment to enhance their practice. Therefore, nurses support their leader and adhere to the leaders’ guidelines to achieve their shared goals.

Community and Population Health

Community and Population Health Definition

My understanding and definition of community and population health changed after completing Professional Roles and Values. Community and population health can be improved by assessing healthcare needs of individuals and the entire population (Rayan-Gharra et al., 2022). An effective community-based program is the applied in a culturally sensitive manner to improve population’s health and quality of life. Improving population health involves understanding demographic distribution and social determinants of health. The “Community Health and Population Focused Nursing” artifact supported this definition. This assignment emphasize significance of evaluating the community and its residents to develop the best community-based intervention. Evidence-Based Practice Across The Health Professions Assignment Paper

Community and Population Health Task Summary

The “Community Health Nursing” task was educative and informative. I learned that community health promotion involves need assessment, demographic assessment, and neighborhood safety assessment. Incorporating these components into population and community health results in the best community-based health promotion program. Knowledge and skills acquired while compiling the “Community Health Nursing” assignment informed community diagnosis. Need and demographic assessment were conducted to identify problems that must be addressed to improve community health outcomes and individuals’ quality of life. The initial plan and diagnosis changed after working with selected population due to change in community’s health issues that required to be resolved immediately to prevent adverse clinical outcomes. The significance of the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) certification in my future nursing role involves enhancing incorporation of ethical, legal, and social implications of genomes and genetics into my clinical practice.
