Klima, D., Morgan, L., Baylor, M., Reilly, C., Gladmon, D., & Davey, A. (2019). Physical performance and fall risk in persons with traumatic brain injury. Perceptual and motor skills, 126(1), 50-69.
This study sought out to evaluate the balance and gait performance of patients with traumatic brain injuries with an upcoming discharge date. The sample size that they used was 20 patients with traumatic brain injuries and 20 patients of the same age without traumatic brain injuries as a control group. The inclusion criteria was based on Rancho scoring and the Glasgow Coma Recovery Scale. The majority of the injuries that were sustained included hematoma and skull fractures. There were 3 measures of gait performance including the TUG test, the 10 Meter Walk test and The Walking and Remembering Test. The patients’ balance was tested by The Fullerton Advance Balance Scale, The Fullerton Advance Balance Scale and BERG Balance Scale. The researchers analyzed the data using descriptive statistics, physical performance variables, independent t tests and chi-squared analysis. The patients that had sustained traumatic brain injuries performed lower on all tests that evaluated gait, balance and speed of walking by a wide margin. These findings pose a concern for patients with traumatic brain injuries nearing discharge as they have a higher risk of sustaining a fall at home. The researchers recommend incorporating more gait and balance training to focus on these deficits in patients that have sustained traumatic brain injuries. Thank you for the great summary of Klima et al study. It is informative and helps us to understand physical performance among persons with relatively acute phase of traumatic brain injury as they prepare for rehabilitation discharge. The study also employed blended clinical measures which can be used in various clinical settings to examine attributes of physical performance used in the study. This makes it easier for another researcher to replicate the study in different settings and check if the results will be similar. Klima et al (2019) used a sample of size of 40, 20 for the control group, and 20 for the experimental group. I opine that a slightly larger sample size would have been used to make the study more representative of the target audience population (Berndt, 2020). The research used exploratory in nature, which allows a researcher to lay a strong foundation for future similar studies. However, exploratory research has a limitation in its qualitative data and subsequent analysis which makes it hard to evaluate it and come up with accurate and objective insights (Samuel & König-Ries, 2021). The results of the research can be used to initiate a change in practice through training on balance and gait for patients with traumatic brain injuries.
