A description of general healthcare technology trends
During the past decades, information and communication technology (ICT) has offered healthcare professionals with support in patient care information. Electronic health records are healthcare technology trends I have observed in my healthcare organization. EHR is a digital chart including all the treatment and medical history of the patient, designed to be accessed by healthcare staff within the organization as well as beyond, for example, general practitioners. According to Tertulino et al. (2023)Healthcare Information Technology Essay Example, EHRs are commonly utilized in storing patient data within healthcare organizations. EHR systems offer storage, management, and exchange of patient data inside and between institutions. In the past, medical records have been recorded on paper. Nevertheless, nowadays, advances in ICT have made it possible to transform medical records on paper to an electronic version of the medical records.
Potential challenges that might be inherent in the technologies
EHR is a promising solution for improving the interoperability of patient data across health- care settings and attaining a safer, cost-effective, and higher quality of care. Ge et al., (2022) posit that Patient’s health data is stored as well as transmitted and accessed by interdisciplinary providers involved in the care of the patient. However, EHR comes with the challenge of providers using more time on documentation. Providers are concerned that these systems would shift their attention away from patients to screens and might make them miss crucial medical information. For instance, example, screen gaze disrupts providers’ communication with patients by hindering psychosocial inquiry, eye contact, and emotional responsiveness between patients and providers (Ge et al., 2022)Healthcare Information Technology Essay Example.
A potential benefit and risk associated with data safety, legislation and patient care
The utilization of EHRs raises concerns about the integrity of patient records, privacy, and safety. However, privacy policies have been legalized to grant control and safeguard the privacy of patient records. For instance, in the United States, the Health Insurance and Accountability Act protects information related to health data stored or transmitted by the institution by an oral, paper or electronic means (Tertulino et al., 2023)Healthcare Information Technology Essay Example.
With EHR, there are greater risks of a breakdown of information integrity with malicious insiders, hackers, and password leakage. According to Tertulino et al. (2023), the implementation of EHR along with its data processing presents multiple privacy problems, particularly when data are shared, used, or accessed by those without authorized access. Sharing or transferring confidential health information without authorization can result in data breach.
Healthcare technology trends most promising for impacting healthcare technology in nursing practice
Wearable devices/ wearable technology are healthcare technology trends I believe to be most promising for impacting healthcare technology in nursing practice. According to Edward et al. (2021), wearable devices are becoming increasingly popular and this trend demonstrates a substantial uptake of wearable devices by individuals in the community. Such devices can be used in monitoring calorie usage, heart rate, dietary intake, and sleep. The utilization of wearable devices provides an opportunity for nurses to engage patients who use wearable activity trackers in activities aimed at improving their health awareness and healthy behaviors.

Wearable devices have the potential to contribute to improvement in patient care outcomes. According to. Lu et al. (2020)Healthcare Information Technology Essay Example, wearable devices in the form of portable health or medical electronic devices worn in the body can be utilized to perceive, record, analyze, regulate, and intervene to maintain health. By intelligently incorporating mechanical functions with computing power, wearable devices can be utilized for instant detection of patient signs and laboratory indicators and offer drug administration reminders, and exercise guidance.
