Lack of affordable healthcare

Different healthcare stressors affect the provision of healthcare and the general public health at large. In this discussion, I will discuss the lack of affordable healthcare, the social determinants that affect it mostly, and how the health system has responded to it. Lack of affordable health care is a common health issue affecting the majority of the population, especially in such an error of escalated living costs. The lack of affordable healthcare has demonstrated significant impacts in the community healthcare clinic I have been working. I have encountered several cases of patients in the facility who cannot pay for their medications. The majority of the people who visit this facility are low-income and marginalized. Several times, this has delayed the treatment process endangering many people’s lives. Income and social support are one of the social determinants that affect this healthcare issue. The victims of this issue are the marginalized and low-income individuals due to their limited coverage and lack of insurance (Zhao et al., 2020). They cannot afford premiums and deductibles. My facility has implemented several changes to address this issue by expanding the eligibility criteria for financial assistance programs to accommodate more people who are finding it hard to afford services. For example, the clinic has provided sliding scale fees depending on the patient’s income and connecting some to external sources for prescription assistance and insurance enrolment. Also, the facility partners with local pharmacies to get medications at discounts to make them more affordable. The facility offers free chronic disease management, screenings, educational workshops, and vaccinations.
