Nurses can only provide quality services if the environment they work in offers conditions that support them. Positive work environments are crucial in achieving quality care, employee and patient safety, and positive patient outcomes. According to Er and Sokmen (2018), a positive work environment involves the development of a business environment where systems, procedures, and policies are designed for the staff to derive personal satisfaction in the place of work and fulfill organizational goals. This implies that a positive work environment involves the activities that an organization implements to achieve the maximum level of quality patient care outcomes, nurse well-being and health, positive social outcomes, and high institutional performance.

Work environments play a role in ensuring staff safety and health and obtaining a favorable level of productivity from staff. However, nurses operate in negative work environments
Er and Sokmen(2018) posit that occupying a crucial role in the improvement and protection of the community, family, and individual health, the development and advancement of health services, and the provision of effective education and care to patients, nursing is one of the riskiest and complex professions in regard to working conditions. Nurses are often exposed to risks since they spend a lot of time with patients and engage in the provision of direct patient care. Apart from the risk of infections, nurses face overwork and stress.
What kinds of things contributed to its development?
Low staffing, irregular schedules, heavy workloads, and lack of support from managers are things that contribute to the development of negative working environments for nurses. According to Er and Sokmen (2018), nurses work in a system of night duties and shifts, and are subjected to long working periods without adequate breaks, excessive workload, irregular and tiring working hours, lack of managerial support, role confusion, distressful work relationships (weak communication, harassing or mean behavior, and violence), and low professional status, which lead to unhealthy work environments for nurses. A negative work environment makes nurses to be distracted and alienated from the profession Negative Work Environment on Both Nurses Well Being And Patient Care Essay
How and why did this issue come to exist currently?
In recent decades, numerous countries have re-engineered, reorganized, and restructured their health care systems, and subsequently, a positive work environment for the delivery of health care has become a powerful and important factor affecting nurses in clinical practice. According to Hagazy et al. (2021), a positive work environment enables nurses to accomplish organizational goals and gain satisfaction from their job. However, the nursing work environment is too intricate and characterized by good professional relationships, adequate resources and staffing, nursing engagement in hospital affairs, a balanced work schedule, and the ability, leadership, and support of nurse managers.
Factors that influence the positive environment include organizational support, environmental control, relationships with colleagues, and autonomy. However, there exist negative factors such as an inadequate number of nurses, communication problems with teams, insufficient equipment, increased workloads, and lack of support by management that lead to an unhealthy work environment. Hegazy et al. (2021) indicate that a negative work environment and negative perceptions prevent nurses from providing safe and high-quality health care. Research has connected favorable nursing environments to better patient and nurse outcomes globally. Nevertheless, the majority of nurses report dissatisfaction and disengagement with their work for reasons attributable to the work environment. Negative work environment factors like having to carry out psychologically and physically intense nursing tasks and irregular schedules, make nurses have an unhealthy lifestyle, which can negatively impact their ability to work. Unfavorable work characteristics could act as barriers and stressors to nurses’ ability to practice self-care and prevent them from leading healthy lifestyles. For instance, extended work as a result of low staffing can lead to nurses having inadequate energy to conduct self-care behaviors. In addition, negative managerial support can impede nurses from practicing health promoting behaviors. Negative/ poor practice environments have negative consequences for both patients and nurses (Hegazy et al., 2021).
