Reflection on Theories Reviewed This Week

During Week 4, various nursing and borrowed theories were explored, offering a deeper understanding of how theoretical frameworks guide nursing practice. Among these, Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring and McCormack and McCance’s Person-Centred Nursing Framework were particularly meaningful. Both theories emphasize individualized patient care, though their approaches differ.

Watson’s Theory of Human Caring focuses on treating patients as whole beings—acknowledging their emotional, spiritual, and physical needs. In contrast, McCormack and McCance’s framework emphasizes aligning care plans with a patient’s values, beliefs, and cultural context. Together, they highlight the necessity of treating patients as unique individuals rather than mere subjects of care.

This week, I met the learning objectives through active participation in discussions and theoretical application to real-life nursing situations. Reflecting on my experience in the emergency department, I recognized that while care delivery was often evidence-based, it was not always patient-centered. The week’s learning reinforced the importance of integrating cultural awareness and individualized care into clinical practice. Moving forward, I aim to avoid routine, “one-size-fits-all” approaches and embrace more holistic, person-centered care in my role as a nurse practitioner.

A significant takeaway from this week was the Person-Centred Nursing Framework by McCormack and McCance. This framework underscores the importance of assessing not only a patient’s clinical needs but also their cultural, emotional, and social dimensions. On the other hand, Watson’s Theory of Human Caring highlights compassion and respect as essential components of healing. Together, these theories emphasize that optimal outcomes occur when patients feel valued, respected, and understood.

Additionally, this week’s learning helped me recognize the risks of over-reliance on standardized care plans. Although evidence-based guidelines are vital, they must be adapted to fit the unique contexts of individual patients. In fast-paced environments like emergency departments, care can become task-oriented, neglecting the holistic needs of patients. Going forward, I plan to apply these theoretical insights to ensure that my practice remains both effective and meaningful.
