Kurt Lewin’s Change Theory and Lippitt’s Seven-Step Change Theory are widely recognized frameworks for understanding and facilitating organizational and behavioral changes, including those within healthcare settings. While they share similarities in their emphasis on planned change, they also exhibit distinct differences.

Kurt Lewin’s Change Theory is based on the three-stage unfreezing, changing, and refreezing model. Unfreezing involves creating awareness of the need for change and breaking down existing patterns; changing refers to implementing a new behavior or intervention, and refreezing consists of solidifying the new behavior as the norm (Muldoon, 2020). This theory emphasizes the importance of minimizing resistance to change and promoting stakeholder collaboration. It aligns well with the planned nature of implementing an evidence-based practice (EBP) intervention, as it encourages a systematic approach to change that involves preparing individuals for the new intervention, introducing and integrating the change, and then reinforcing and stabilizing the new behavior.

Lippitt’s Seven-Step Change Theory, on the other hand, provides a structured approach with specific steps for change initiation, but it places a stronger emphasis on the role of the change agent and the ongoing maintenance of change (Szabla, 2020).
