Kahoot! can be used at the end of the in-service to help evaluate student performance and learning goals.
6. A virtual community message board can be established as a means to provide information regarding patient safety in the operating room as well as a platform to answer questions and enhance student engagement. According to Ghasemi et al. (2020), the use of a virtual community message board is recommended as a means of a teaching strategy that can be applied to operating room educational techniques. These can include current recommendations by the American Perioperative Nursing Association as well as current hospital policy.

The outcome of the satisfaction survey received mixed reviews. Most of the learners answered an average of “Satisfied to somewhat satisfied”. Some of the comments that stand out would be that the beginning of the presentation regarding patient positioning took too much time and as a result, spent less than the anticipated time for the Kahoot! formative assessment. A majority of the circulating nurses expressed that they “agree to somewhat agree” that lessons learned during the educational in-service apply to their job. Comments included that the lesson was engaging and interactive. It was also mentioned that too much information regarding evidence-based practices.

 

7. Learning needs assessment (Include the learning needs assessment in Appendix B).

 

According to the learning needs assessment, professional learning goals included methods to increase patient safety in the operating room. Visual presentations and hands-on in-services would be most useful in facilitating education. Barriers would include time constraints as well as lack of attention from management. According to the learning needs assessment, a majority of surgical staff recommended an educational in-service regarding patient positioning during surgery as well as methods to help reduce surgical specimen mistakes. Introduction

The provision of healthcare is a process that continues to evolve as new evidence emerges that suggests the delivery of better and safer patient care. Healthcare providers must be able to embrace these changes for improvement and adapt to an environment that facilitates the use of the best healthcare practices. Before the dissemination of information can take place, a learning needs assessment should be performed by an educator to help determine the gaps of knowledge in a target audience. According to Hudson et al. (2017), a learning needs assessment involves educators planning, developing, and delivering appropriate educational strategies by collecting information about the learning needs of a target audience. The purpose of this paper is to create a learning needs assessment and to determine the learning outcomes for a perioperative department. The paper will also explain the collection techniques used for a learning needs assessment of a perioperative department, how it will be administered to a group of nurses, and a description of how the data collected will be used when developing a lesson plan. Data Collection Techniques

The perioperative department consists of a diverse group of nurses that vary in their experience and skill level. As a learning needs assessment is a systematic approach to examine what a certain group needs to learn, educators are recommended to perform these assessments before any formal learning activity is conducted (Pilcher, 2016). The learning needs assessment will involve a data collection phase to gather information used to produce an appropriate lesson plan. Data collection can include a variety of methods used as tools for a learning needs assessment to discover gaps in nursing knowledge. A commonly used gap analysis tool used to collect data for a learning needs assessment would be to conduct a survey of the target audience. According to Pilcher (2016), surveys are commonly used as a gap analysis tool for a large target audience group and allow for a diverse set of responses on a particular perspective or topic. For some questions on the survey, a Likert-style answer format can be used to gauge the response choices based on the situation. An example can include a survey question where the learner would be surveyed to rate the level of importance of learning about a potential topic with choices ranging from “Extremely important” to “Not at all important”. This would allow the educator to rate educational topics based on the Likert survey responses. Other questions can include an open answer response where participants can fill in their answers. This subjective response can allow the responder to elaborate on their answers and provide a more meaningful response. This survey will necessitate the use of a computer where it can be typed and printed. Once printed, the survey will be passed out to the group of students and returned before the end of their shift. The participation goal for the survey will be at least an 80 percent participation rate. Development of the Lesson Plan from Collected Data

The development of the educational lesson plan will be based on student responses of the survey results. Data collected from the generated survey will be used to identify gaps of knowledge between nurses, and areas of performance improvement within the perioperative department.
