Healthcare stakeholders—patients, providers, and regulatory bodies alike—increasingly expect care to be guided by evidence-based practice (EBP). While research offers a solid foundation for clinical decision-making, many patients still do not receive treatment rooted in evidence. This influx of information creates a daunting task for healthcare providers, who must deliver care and continuously seek out, analyze, and apply the latest findings. Unfortunately, many medical settings fail to support such practices adequately (Li et al., 2018).

The Development of EBP Models

Various models have been developed to help nurses integrate EBP into their workflows. While these models differ in specifics, they share a common framework: identifying clinical issues, synthesizing evidence, and implementing and evaluating interventions (Cullen et al., 2018). Unlike evidence-based medicine, which focuses on individual clinician-patient interactions, EBP models emphasize integrating systemic evidence into broader clinical practice (Straus, 2018).

One notable example is the Iowa Model, first introduced 25 years ago by faculty and staff at the University of Iowa Hospital. Updated in 2017, this model remains a cornerstone for implementing evidence-based nursing practices in the United States (Iowa Model Collaborative, 2018; Titler, 2018).

Barriers to Widespread Adoption

EBP models are inconsistently applied across organizations and countries despite their long-standing existence. These models must be disseminated and adopted to standardize evidence-based care delivery (Melnyk, 2017). Efforts to expand the use of the Iowa Model have led researchers to investigate how nurses perceive and implement it in different healthcare settings. This understanding is vital for improving the model’s integration and ensuring its relevance in diverse environments (Teodoro, 2018).

Broader Perspectives on EBP

Expanding the Focus

While initial studies on EBP models often focus narrowly on specific objectives, evolving research reveals the need to examine broader factors influencing the EBP environment. Interpretive descriptive studies, such as those by Teodoro (2018), provide deeper insights into the barriers and facilitators of EBP integration. By broadening the scope, researchers can identify systemic changes needed to support evidence-based care more effectively.
