Concept Analysis

The theoretical basis in nursing relies on relevant concept delineation to the nursing discipline. Nurse scholars must borrow these concepts to elucidate nursing knowledge that guides professional practice and research. Consequently, these concepts are further refined and explicated due to nurse researchers’ background results for all patients, either from a specific nursing administration or the patient population engaging in various system processes and designs. Therefore, the paper will select a nursing concept, the three defining attributes, antecedent and consequence, model case, theoretical application, and reflection.

Selecting a Nursing Concept

The selected nursing concept is the quality of life (QoL), which is crucial in healthcare. According to Ruiz-Fernández et al. (2020), QoL reflects a concept that captures an individual or a population’s well-being concerning their negative or positive perspectives on their existence within a specific time or point. That means QoL focuses on the individual’s mental and physical health perspectives over time. Also, one may perceive QoL in ways an individual is comfortable, healthy, and can easily interact and enjoy life events (Haraldstad et al., 2019)Nursing Concept Analysis Assignment Discussion Paper. In that case, QoL presents as innately ambiguous since, on the one hand, it may reflect an individual’s life experience, and on the other hand, it may be perceived as the living conditions in which individuals find themselves.

Three Defining Attributes

The main QoL defining attributes include social belonging, personal health, and autonomy when making decisions. In that case, when individuals rate their QoL as excellent, they must be content with their overall life (Haraldstad et al., 2019). That includes how they relate with each other since it enhances collaboration while increasing these individuals’ sense of belonging. Consequently, such individuals must rate their mental, social, emotional, and physical health as satisfactory to assert that their QoL is excellent. That means such individuals must present satisfactory remarks on their physiological performance to gain harmony and balance in their lives and others. That also means that individuals with excellent QoL must develop positive body image and self-esteem, including positive social support, personal relationships, and social interactions (Haraldstad et al., 2019). Lastly, good QoL is reflected when an individual can make decisions autonomously to logically term their life more satisfactorily.

Antecedent and Consequence of the Concept

An antecedent refers to a preceding factor and should not be perceived as a causative factor. However, such a concept must happen, which most probably can lead to its cause (Tsimane & Downing, 2020). A QoL antecedent is the individual’s potential to make informed decisions. The reason for such an assertion is that a person may find it crucial to continue life despite the issues that may have happened. Unfortunately, such decisions always reside with the individual’s QoL limitations, like socialization levels and physical activities. In such a case, a person has to assess their lives to make decisions that may sometimes worsen or enhance their QoL.

For consequences, these are factors that come after an occurrence has happened in an individual’s life. The main QoL consequence is accepting the prevailing circumstance. Tsimane and Downing (2020) postulate that positive QoL results include satisfaction, adaptation, and coping with life. However, for individuals who may develop negative QoL, the results include risk-taking behaviors beyond one’s age and unsatisfactory results.

Model Case

The model case revolves around a concept use that proves all its defining attributes. In such a case, the model case section presents a QoL model case of a 33-year-old male arriving home after a tireless day at work. As he parks his car at their apartment parking lot, his 4-year-old and 6-year-old joyfully come running in his direction as a sign of welcoming him. When he looks at his house entrance, he can see the wife smiling, and she waves at him. The children offer to help him carry some of the items he had bought, and when he gets to where the wife is, she hugs him and welcomes him into the house. She then offers him coffee, and as she sips the coffee, his mind  starts ringing, “I have already achieved the life that I have dreamt and worked for, meaning I do not have to change anything.” From his reflective side, the man believes he is lucky to have a running business, a happy family, supportive friends, and good health. Consequently, most people perceive him as a role model, making him more satisfied with his life. Nursing Concept Analysis Assignment Discussion Paper

The case model showcases the case study of a man’s perception of quality of life. In such a case, the defining attributes one can find in the case study include the man’s overall sense of a satisfactory and happy life. Consequently, he can autonomously make his decisions without relying on others, while his friends perceive him as a role model, considering that they look up to him.

Theoretical Application

Of the many nursing theories, the theory that resonates with the QoL concept is Peplau’s nursing theory. As Wasaya et al. (2021) posit, QoL is an extensive and indefinable phenomenon that Peplau perceives as a situation’s subjective view that equates to an individual’s psychological wellness and overall well-being and is associated with health. Peplau’s theory upholds relationship as a fundamental cause, while QoL perception revolves around being a relationship by-product, making it crucial to the theory. Hence, in Peplau’s proposal, QoL presents a subjective perception, while its variance depends on changing conditions, meaning its situation is dependent and depends on time (Wasaya et al., 2021). For instance, in the case model, the 33-year-old man’s QoL depended on the situation that saw his wife and children welcome him warmly in his house. Such a situation was eye-opening for the man that his family and friends are important people. Despite such proof, Peplau’s perception of QoL reflects an intangible quality.

Reflection and Conclusion

QoL is a crucial concept that most healthcare industries globally focus on to enhance overall healthcare services. For advanced nursing practice (APN), these nurses must comprehend that QOL focuses on ensuring individuals develop good lives. Consequently, APRNs must acknowledge that patients with balanced relationships and those who can easily maintain personal potential and adequate care have a higher potential to attain a good life. Hence, the QoL concept is crucial to nurses during nursing practice since patients have to consult and interact with healthcare providers to achieve optimal QoL for patients and families. Therefore, nurse practitioners must comprehend the meaning of QoL to help the patients and their families easily.
