Name of painting: The Aunt Pepa portrait
Name of the artist: Pablo Picasso
Date created: 1896
Image of the painting: Josefa Ruiz Blasco
The work of painting demonstrates a smooth line of expression. The brush strokes have improved along the canvas and the artist mainly emphasizes the face as he presents a dim representation of the clothes which Aunt Pepa had won together with a shady background (The Portrait of Aunt Pepa, n.d).
The style that the artist uses is known as realism. Realism is successful based on the choice of the subject matter that the artists display (The Portrait of Aunt Pepa, n.d). The model of the artist was Josefa Ruiz Blasco, who were his aunt and a sister to the father.
The movement by the artists mainly showed a rush and he mainly aimed at completing the painting. It shows that he lacked enthusiasm in the work since his only goal was to complete it and effectively demonstrated what he wanted the people to see, and that is Aunt Pepa (The Portrait of Aunt Pepa, n.d)Paintings And Reflections Assignment Discussion Paper. Josefa was not a fan of painting but he loved good work and Picasso did not have the morale to finish the work.
The painting has been vastly influenced by history. Its main motivators were Velasquez and the works of both artists were similar since they used the historical Spanish portrait. The political perspectives have also impacted the painting. Josefa was against a painting being made of herself, but Salavdo who is her husband was against it and he commissioned a painting of her to be done (Richman- Abdou, 2018). He believed that it could be an important way of showing prestige about his wife whom he thought was beautiful. He highly respected the social class in society and he knew the decisions in society were made by men and that was why he made a decision for a painting of the wife to be created.
The art demonstrates several moral lessons and things people can learn from. Its extrinsic movement and style show the importance of emphasis. The things that are considered important in life have to be emphasized for people to pay more attention to them (Richman- Abdou, 2018)Paintings And Reflections Assignment Discussion Paper. In this case, the attention was on the lady’s face since that was what he wanted people to see. The artist wanted people to see the raw realism that existed in Josefa’s face and the reluctance that was there when she came out as a model.
The article shows the rich Spanish artwork that was pioneered by Diego Velasquez who is considered a better person. Rich Spanish art has been accepted in modern-day art and it is crucial to understand the context of artwork that contributes to the way people understand the culture of the artists and interpret them. It also assists in interpreting an image and the need to appreciate work even when it depicts different perspectives.
The artists who make images have different skills and reasons why they create the images. People may find it hard to know the role of an artist in creating an image until they come into close contact with it and look at it keenly (Martin & Jacobus, 2014). The image of Aunt Pupa was an eye-opener for the community since it gave them a chance for the women to be seen as important people in society and their decisions were prioritized.
