  1. Personal Reflection of four areas of Nursing
  • Quality and Safety- To me quality and safety means giving competent and compassionate great care to patients. From the get-go in nursing school to present patient safety is embedded in us. For instance, when giving medications I use the 5 rights which are “the right patient, the right drug, the right dose, the right route, and the right time.“ (Federico, 2022) and 2 patient identifiers such as name and date of birth. I also always go over allergic reactions prior to administering patients any medication. This is one way to ensure my patients are safely taken care of.
  • Evidence Based Practice (EBP)- I have recently used EBP to update my team on why early ambulation is the best practice for total hip arthroplasty (THA) patients. With a full census daily, we hold anywhere from a few to 10 or more patients in the recovery room. Utilizing the EBP research I did on decreased deep vein thrombosis and better patient outcomes because of early ambulation; along with collaborating with physical therapists. I was able to get my staff trained on ambulating THA patients post operatively. We are now able to give better, optimal, and competent care for these patients. • Applied Leadership- As charge nurse in a busy level 1 trauma center post anesthesia care unit, (PACU) tensions sometimes escalate between staff for whatever reason. I like my PACU to have a chill, Zen, almost meditative feel. I make sure the lights are dim for the patients and play ambient music in the background. This gives PACU an optimal environment for the patients waking up. However, that can quickly change when you have typically two people not agreeing completely or even staff just talking too loudly amongst themselves. As a nurse with great leadership qualities, I try to de-escalate any situation quickly and efficiently. I ask the staff to please lower their voices as with the hostility situation. The aggressors are removed from the nurse’s station and taken to the break room or if necessary, the manager’s office until the situation can be neutralized. I was recently in this predicament by a fellow nurse who blatantly disrespected me and was pushing my buttons in front of staff and patients. I called my nursing supervisor to come to PACU so I could explain the situation and so she could monitor PACU so I could step off the floor. I walked outside for about 20 minutes or so until I calmed down and then resumed my place as charge nurse. That nurse was asked to clock out and go home. The next day he apologized to me. As Dr. Bell stated, “The ability to inspire, influence, and motivate nursing staff and other health care workers to work together to achieve their highest potential and collective organizational goals.” (Morganelli, 2022) Therefore, being a strong leader is important for the nursing field.
  • Community and Population Health- I feel like when community and population health are mentioned it brings our attention to the recent COVID pandemic. I remember traveling from Texas and then back to Florida March 2020, just as borders on state lines were being shut down. Several police with their blue lights on monitoring the state lines. Schools going virtual and traffic minimal with mostly first responders and those that needed to be on the road like our truck drivers. I remember the death tolls rising and acquiring COVID was like having a death sentence. Not just our community but all communities were hit hard and were affected by this pandemic that seemed to shut the world down. People lost their businesses, their jobs, and their lives. I have never witnessed anything like this in my life. I am thankful I could pick up more hours and even volunteered to float down to the emergency room to help the overwhelmed staff and our community.
