The US is one of the countries of the world where Generalized anxiety disorders (GADs) are more pronounced. According to the report from the world health organization, approximately 265million people all over the world are suffering from GAD (Rosenthal & Burchum, 2021). Researchers are however on work each day striving to determine effectiveness of medications such as anxiolytics towards the treatment of anxiety disorders. In terms of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, anxiolytics can be described as a group of medications that trigger the neurotransmitters of the brain that fires synapses associated with improvement of mood and anxiety symptoms (Speed Pharmacology, 2018)Pharmacokinetics And Pharmacodynamics Of Anxiolytic Medications Discussion. There are however other medication options that are not classified as anxiolytics but can be used in treatment of anxiety disorders.

My past experience concerns a 75-year-old man who was admitted to the facility after complaining of severe headaches, numbness of limbs and difficulties in communication and sleeping. The patient further portrayed some behaviors such as avoiding eye contact, being startled easily, difficulties to control feelings and being easily fatigued. Further assessment showed increased heart rate, cold flashes, numbness, sweating and shaking. The patient was diagnosed with stroke, anxiety and depression.

The first group of medication that the patient was subjected to were the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. It is a group of medications known to treat depression but are often used in treatment of anxiety symptoms. According to literature from meta-analysis, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors such as sertraline and paroxetine can be used in GAD treatment (Walden University, LLC. Producer). The medication was however found to be weakening the patient’s bones. The patient was after some time subjected to ensam medication which is a type of antidepressant administered through transdermal route. Considering that the patient is an elderly prone to reduced tissue blood perfusion, the absorption of this medication was affected.

When treating anxiety and depression such as from the presented case, I would consider SSRIs which also have a personalized plan of care. The action of these medications is escalating the brain chemicals that fight anxiety and depression. To avoid the bone thinning effect brought by the medication, I would start the dosage at low quantity for the 75-year-old patient and slowly increase them as time goes.
