Human Development

  • Case

  • Theory

Prompt Description
Selected Theories: The theory of Erikson was selected to work with Brenda’s scenario because of the following hypothesis: It has to do with age and development which is a formulated based on eight stages (Maree, 2021). According to this philosophy of life, how does one grow throughout one’s life? It is apparent that the status of Brenda is between the Erikson’s stages six and seven, in general.

Considering Bowlby’s attachment theory of development, information about Brenda, her relation with her mother, and her current relationship status will be used. Cobb (2020) established that this hypothesis involves attachment and relationships with different members of the family.

Stage Details: Brenda is an unsatisfied 43 years old single woman who does not like her job. While still in college at the tender age of twenty-something she is involved in a romantic affair. She only got married at the age of 27 years, this was attributed by a number of reasons. After a poor quality marriage, Brenda decided to file for a divorce at the age of thirty eight. As for her family relationships, her mother and she do not speak to each other.

For the present moment, she has the issues connected with non-acceptance within the group and she thinks she failed her friends in such aspects as marriage, motherhood, and career.

How theory helps the understanding of development: The processes of progression for Erikson are rooted in such socio-emotional incidents in lifetime. It moves through eight ages according to de Car-valho and Veiga (2022). As far as Brenda’s present state is concerned, only stages 6 and 7 of the theory are relevant. Stage 6 with intimacy vs. isolation at its core covers the years between eighteen to forty. Loneliness follows where individuals fail to work on the relationships that they desire. That may be why Brenda is lonely, and has no interest in dating. This is probably why she is unhappy with her career in marketing because, it involves so much conformity to social interactions. Stage 7 of the hypothesis encompasses the three years 40–65. Caring, ensuring others’ success, one’s children for instance, are all examples of the virtue that people chase throughout this particular season. To this date at the age of 43, Brenda still wants that.

Bowlby’s attachment theory covers the way in which we interact with the people we care about such as parents, children, spouses and other kin (Robledo et al. , 2022). The existing relationship between Brenda, her mother, and her husband Robert is the focus of this thesis.

Prompt Description
What the professional information or research says: Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development pays much attention to personal and social development. The above eight steps are determined by age and mental health of the client. In the first eighteen months of a baby’s existence there is a time of positive dependence and a time of negative dependence. The second developmental stage of the moral personality is autonomy against shame and doubt, which takes place from 18 months to three years of age. This step involves understanding how to manage the self which is usually achieved in kid during this stage. Slipping from the guilt-based stage to the initiative-based one takes place throughout the preschool age. Psychologically and socially, this is the most significant period in a person’s development. The fourth phase is the competence vs inferiority phase, and lasts from the age of five to twelve years. According to identity vs confusion, Stage 5 happens in the course of adolescence. Stage Six is intimacy Isolation and occurs between the age of 18-40. Generativity vs. stagnation that forms the basis of stage 7 of this theory is experienced between the age of 40 and 65 years. The last, eighth, stage is that of old age where while witnessing the whole life in snapshots, the main virtue is integrity and not despair (de Carvalho & Veiga, 2022).

Interpersonal connections with primary caretakers or other close people are in the center of the attachment theory formulated by John Bowlby. This concept maybe be used to explain anxiety and anguish individuals feel during separation (Bosmans et al. , 2020).

How this information relates to the case: Brenda is in the fifth stage of Erikson’s developmental theory that is associated with identity crisis; she is 43 years. Erikson stage 6 the theory of inti-macy vs. isolation can be applied here. Brenda is trying to get out of society because acquires no live experiences to relate too. At the moment she not only lacks companionship but is also averse to communication with other people. In the last stage seven of Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development, Brenda experienced feelings of uselessness from failure at different stages in her life.

In the social domain, Brenda never developed good relation with her mother and /or husband. Furthermore, she is childless. Hence, the Bowlby’s attachment theory can be fitted into this description.
