Caregiving is a humanistic approach to patient interaction that shows genuine interest as well as concern for patients as human beings, while compassion is the ability to empathize with the suffering of others (Bivins et al., 2017). I always take time with the patients during my procedures, like bed bathing, and I always make sure I listen to the concerns of the family about their patients. Sometimes, they just need to be listened to as a sign of assurance to them. In my compassionate and caring acts, one case of a 40-year-old patient who had a stroke stands out. He had lost balance, had trouble walking, and had difficulty seeing and communicating. He only pronounced a few words, and I had to be very keen so that I could understand him. I had to ensure I made frequent bed turns to prevent the development of decubitus ulcers. I did bed baths to ensure hygiene and to ensure his comfortability. I felt like I really understood this patient. I made an effort to treat him with warmth and respect while we conversed. I was able to offer him kindness by focusing on his needs as a patient. I showed kindness to his family by listening to them and being open with them. Had I known how I might have helped this family throughout their hospitalization, I may have acted differently. Nonetheless, I make it a point to take my time, be gentle, and maintain a compassionate attitude toward my patients at all times.

How Does Your Thinking About Compassion Expand To Include Self and Colleagues?

My comprehension of compassion in our nursing career goes beyond the patient to include my colleagues and myself since I think nurses may be too hard on themselves as they deal with the stress and grief they may encounter on the job. We have to take care of ourselves before we take care of others. In order to maintain showing compassion to the patients, it is crucial that we take care of ourselves and each other on the job. Compassion fatigue is experienced when a healthcare provider is emotionally drained by constantly being subjected to the tragedy, suffering, and agony of their patients (Yoder, 2010)Reflection On iCARE Self-Assessment Assignment Paper. A nurse’s capacity to offer compassionate care to patients might be impaired by compassion fatigue, which causes profound emotional depletion. Therefore, as nurses, we should ensure we take care of ourselves, help others learn to do the same and provide empathetic support to our colleagues (Yoder, 2010). We should be mindful of our collogues to ensure a safe working environment and their amount to good relationships with the patients and their families.

Reflection on iCARE Self-Assessment

I demonstrate care to peers by showing respect, and love, ensuring teamwork to prevent burnout while working. This is because when nurses are unmotivated and experience burnout, their care for patients will be negatively affected, resulting in poor patient outcomes. To my patients and their families I treat them equivalently with my peers. My take is always that we are all human, and we should live in the best humane ways. To coexist, we must help each other despite their situations. My instructors have been kind to me and respectful to me and always advise on where to improve, and they correct me with ultimate respect.
