There exist key differences between schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorders. To begin with, schizophrenia is a disorder that involves a patient having disruptions in their process of thinking, disruptions in behaviors, emotions and perception. Its common symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, negative symptoms such as reduction in emotional expression and a thinking capacity that is disorganized. Schizoaffective disorder on the other hand is said to be a hybrid type disorder that manifest with a combination of features from mood disorders and schizophrenia (Hartman et al., 2019). Its symptoms are therefore partially from schizophrenia and partially from mood disorders. The schizophrenia diagnostic criteria encompasses experiencing at least two of the following symptoms within a period of not less than a month; negative symptoms, hallucinations, disorganized behaviors, a speech that is disorganized and negative symptoms (Hartman et al., 2019). Schizoaffective disorder on the other hand, its diagnostic criteria involves the presence of at least one episode of major mood accompanied with symptoms of schizophrenia such as hallucinations. The schizophrenia evidence based treatment involves a combination of both psychosocial and antipsychotic medications. For the case of schizoaffective disorders, evidence based treatment involves combinations of schizophrenia and mood disorders medications. However, mood stabilizers and antipsychotics are much recommended depending on the mood episode that the patient is experiencing. Psychosocial interventions play a much significant role in both disorders towards improving social functioning and symptoms management. The study done by Kishimoto et al (2019) investigates the use of second-generation antipsychotics towards the treatment of schizophrenia and their effectiveness.
