How The Experience In The Course Has Changed My Expectations For Psychiatric Prescribing Practices

My engagement in this course has been transformative, crystallizing a comprehensive understanding of psychiatric prescribing practices. The emphasis on both diagnosis and medication has been pivotal, illuminating the intricate connections between mental health conditions and pharmacological interventions (Nguyen et al., 2020). The insight into diagnostic criteria has proven invaluable, elucidating the complexities that underlie effective treatment strategies. I have gained a profound appreciation for the nuanced challenges, realizing why some primary care providers may face limitations in addressing mental health needs. This course has elevated my expectations, underscoring the necessity for well-rounded, specialized approaches to psychiatric care. My Expectations From Participating In This Course and Whether They Were Met

My initial goal in this course was to learn more about pharmaceutical classes and how to prescribe them. I’m happy to confirm that the course met and exceeded these expectations by offering in-depth information on all fronts. I now have a solid grasp of drug classifications and the intended uses for which they are intended. Weekly quizzes have proven crucial since they replicate patient interactions and emphasize the breadth of knowledge required for efficient patient care. The course has directly addressed my question regarding prescription SSRIs as a practicing nurse, providing insightful background and justification for these therapies and enhancing my clinical viewpoint.

Whether I Had Preconceived Biases That Affected My Experience As I Worked Through The Course The Effect of Clinical Practice Guidelines on Prescribing Practice in Mental Health Essay

Before this course, my only preexisting notion concerned Seroquel’s effectiveness. This viewpoint was partly based on its widespread off-label use as opposed to its FDA-approved indications for sedation in the intensive care unit. Nonetheless, the training has changed me and expanded my knowledge. I now appreciate Seroquel’s flexibility and that it works well for sedation, even at lesser dosages. Going ahead, I’ll make sure patients are aware of any possible sedative effects if I prescribe it. My original prejudice has been destroyed by this experience, which also emphasizes the value of evidence-based information and encourages a more sophisticated and knowledgeable approach to prescription procedures.

Any “Ah Ha Moments” While Undertaking The Course

An important “ah-ha” moment for me in this training was understanding mood stabilizers and bipolar illness. When I think back on my work as a bedside nurse, I saw a lot of patients who were on anticonvulsants but didn’t seem to have a history of seizures. It occurred to me that rather than seizures, many of these cases may have been people managing bipolar disease. This epiphany was revolutionary, which cleared the air about apparently strange prescriptions. Comprehending the reasoning behind medicine selections has become crucial for my shift into a provider role; it goes beyond a basic understanding of drug classifications to appreciate the nuances of specific patient requirements and diagnoses. This experience has greatly enhanced my clinical viewpoint. The Effect of Clinical Practice Guidelines on Prescribing Practice in Mental Health Essay

How Myself, My Practice And Ideas About Prescribing Psychopharmacological Interventions Has Changed Since Participating In This Course

My viewpoint on the prescription of psychopharmacological therapies has changed significantly. Realizing that each patient is unique, I see it as complex art. SSRI alternatives were initially confusing, but now that I understand their little distinctions, they make sense. It has been illuminating to learn how different drug classes work together to manage depression. The most important lesson is to dedicate yourself to educating patients so they understand the anticipated outcomes, due dates, and backup plans in case they are required (Zanardi et al., 2020). Acknowledging the shortcomings of primary care, I promise to prioritize regular follow-ups and make an effort to customize prescriptions to meet the specific requirements of each patient, promoting more efficient and individualized mental health treatment. The Most Significant Thing That I Have Learned From Participating In This Course

The training has taught me the importance of patient engagement in drug management, which is the most important lesson. It takes a team effort to prescribe; open communication about possible side effects and a backup plan is essential if the medication doesn’t work. Having come to appreciate the value of proactive patient education, I now realize how important it is to communicate up front that the effects of medicine may take some time to manifest to encourage reasonable expectations and prevent premature withdrawal. By taking care of this, it may be possible to reduce the number of cases in which people stop taking SSRIs without consulting a doctor. This highlights the need for a thorough patient education program and a strategy in place if treatment becomes difficult. This realization has significantly changed the way I approach prescription procedures. The Effect of Clinical Practice Guidelines on Prescribing Practice in Mental Health Essay

Final Reflective Writing Assignment

  • Have your experiences in this course changed your personal expectations for psychiatric prescribing practices?

My experiences in this course have finally put all the pieces together. I am glad that this course focused on the diagnosis as well as the medications, as making those connections and having a brief overview of diagnostic criteria was helpful. I now see why some primary care providers may not be equipped enough to adequately care for patients with mental health needs. • What did you expect from participating in this course and were your expectations met? Why or why not?

I expected to learn about medication classes and who to prescribe them to. Both of those aspects were met in this course with great detail. The weekly quizzes added to the course as it helps to see what a patient encounter may be like and how much information we need to know to be able to properly help the patient. In working as a nurse currently I have had patients on SSRI’s such as Paxil, and I had found myself wondering how or why that patient was started on it.

  • Did you have some preconceived biases that affected your experience as you worked through the course?

The only preconceived bias I had prior to this term, was just my bias towards how well Seroquel works. After learning in this course, I see that in the ICU we tend to use it off-label to use as sedation instead of an actual FDA approved use. I will say that I have seen how effective Seroquel is as sedating even at lower doses and moving forward if I prescribe it to patients I will be sure to make them aware that it usually does cause sedation. • Did you have any “ah ha moments” while in this course? If so, please give an example.

The “ah ha” moment I had during this course was my understanding of bipolar disorder and mood stabilizers. I had come across many patients in my time as a bedside nurse that were on what I assumed were medications to prevent seizures, but now looking back, I bet a lot of the patients were actually bipolar. It was confusing to me why a patient would be on an anticonvulsant and not have a seizure history.  This was a big moment for me, mostly because I am trying to transition to the provider role and understand why medications are prescribed instead of just knowing the drug class and its usual uses.

  • How have you, your practice, or your ideas about prescribing psychopharmacological interventions changed since participating in this course?

My ideas about prescribing are now that it is truly an art. There isn’t one drug that will work for everyone. I never understood why there were so many different SSRI’s. And never understood how adding different medication classes could help a patient with depression. My biggest take away from the class is that I will be educating all patients I see on how the medications they start are supposed to work, how fast, and what the plan will be if it doesn’t work at all. I think a lot of primary care providers do not have the ability to follow up frequently with patients and help find the right medication for them, but that is what I am going to be committed to doing. • What was the most significant thing that you have learned from participating in this course?

I learned that the patient should be involved in the option of medication management. I learned how it is really a joint effort to prescribe a medication, and to make patients aware of potential side effects, and what the next steps would be if the given treatment doesn’t work. I have heard many people tell me how they started an SSRI and it wasn’t working so they stopped taking the drug and never went back to see their provider. I think that this could be avoided if the patient is made aware up front that the medication may take time to work, and may not work at all, and to have a follow up visit and plan in place for this situation.
