Climate change, together with existing man-made and natural health stressors are emerging as a major challenges to human health. With climate change, new disease-causing threats are emerging and the existing threats seems to intensify. There are some populations and geographical locations that are at a bigger risk than others. The most essential considerations in evaluating the effects of climate change on human health depends on location, economic resources, and age. Crucial health impacts arising from these disruptions include increasing rates of cardiovascular illnesses, respiratory illness, premature deaths, and injuries due to extreme weather, waterborne diseases, issues of food distribution and threats to mental health, and infections due to vectors.

An important health issue related to climate change is increased exposure to mosquito vector that transmit infections such as the Zika virus, West Nile virus, or Malaria. Climate change alters weather and temperature patterns across the globe and this increases the risks of vector-borne illnesses. Vectors like mosquitoes are living organisms that transmit these infections from one infected person to the other (Hathaway, 2018). The issue of global warming is resulting in warmer temperatures that turn out to be perfect weather for mosquito breeding and other vectors. Also, issues of flooding and drought have equal opportunities for vectors like mosquitoes to thrive due to the availability of water in pools and warmer temperatures that helps in breeding. Also, there are instances of longer seasons such that warmer season extends the duration of disease transmission as more vectors multiply. According to 2019 data there are projections that by 2050 the disease-carrying mosquitoes will have infected over 500 million compared to current trends (WHO, 2021). Even places not adequately affected by climate change are at risk of mosquito-spread infections due to human interactions with other affected regions. For instance, increasing travel and trade between North America and the sub-tropical and tropical regions may escalate the issues of infections. Also, human behavior is changing as a result of climate change such that people are now working longer hours to have food on the table compared to the past. In addition, there is an issue of climate change related to food distribution challenges due to droughts. Climate change is affecting food systems across the world both directly and indirectly. The effects are becoming a source of new challenges to human health and food safety. For example, changes in temperatures and inadequate rainfall are affecting the survivability and distribution of pathogens that bring about food-borne diseases (Howard, 2019). Climate change is related to droughts that reduce rainfall hence negatively affecting crop production. The increasing temperatures in Australia are providing a perfect breeding habitat for mosquitoes (Howard, 2019). The United States is as well experiencing worse forms of health-related issues due to climate change. A nurse can enhance human health through health promotion and health protection initiatives. For instance, in instances of malaria, and related viruses a nurse can use vaccinations to help protect the population from future infections. Also, a nurse can initiate health education programs that help people understand the challenges of climate change to their health (Hathaway, 2018). This can involve educating the public on the importance of caring for the environment such as draining stagnant waters in the compound, using mosquito nets while sleeping and mosquito repellants while at work, and also ways of seeking care when certain symptoms occur.
