Different religious groups prevailed in Middle and Southern colonies. These religious arrangements tempered and mediated the influence of Puritan on American political cultures and also led to understanding on how the church and the state related. The middle colonies of Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York exhibited religious diversity and this pluralism greatly impacted growth of tolerance of religious diversity in American during 18th century. William Pen, a Quaker, established Pennsylvania. Penn believed that individuals need to independently obtain spiritual salvation rather than became saved through a church. He had strong beliefs in religion toleration, and deliberately integrated religious diversity into the establishment of the Pennsylvania colony.
