Response to Discussion 1

Your discussion is based on a quest to understand inflammatory breast cancer. I applaud your discussion on this and the exploration of its environmental links. Your efforts to refine your search using CINAHL Plus are commendable, and it is great to hear that you found the database user-friendly and helpful in finding relevant articles despite the challenges you faced here and there. Your suggestion of using Google Scholar for easier and faster search results is also practical. That aside, however, I suggest that you consider exploring other databases such as PubMed, EBSCOhost and Biomed Central, all available at Walden University, to increase the breadth of your research. Also, I recommend using a combination of keywords and subject headings in your search strategy to certify that you capture all relevant articles (Gusenbauer & Haddaway, 2020)Understanding Inflammatory Breast Cancer Discussion Paper. Guided by your findings during your search of the database, it would be useful to critically appraise the articles you find to assess their quality and relevance to your research question. This would be beneficial in helping select the most appropriate articles to use in your study.

Response to Discussion 2

I found your post to be very informative and well-written. You have articulately outlined your research process and the databases used to search for articles related to hormone replacement therapy for menopausal women. It is especially impressive that you took the time to check for peer review status and assess the available filters to help narrow down your search results. Your choice to read an article on the controversial history of HRT is a valuable starting point for understanding the issue and will be useful for your practice in the future (Cooper et al., 2018)Understanding Inflammatory Breast Cancer Discussion Paper. While this approach is commendable and has evidently been helpful, there is one suggestion that I would make. You could highlight the limitations of the databases you used because they are there. While PubMed’s ability to sort by type of research is useful, it is necessary to keep in mind that not all articles are indexed with the correct type of research designation (Cooper et al., 2018). Also, there may be relevant articles that are not included in the databases you used and it is, therefore, a good idea to check multiple databases and search engines to ensure a comprehensive search.

DISCUSSION 1

I would like to learn and research more on inflammatory breast cancer and environmental links. My dear mother-in-law was diagnosed with this rapidly growing devil. I knew there were different types of breast cancer but did not realize just how many until we had to experience the dreaded “C” word.  I want to learn more about this type is why I chose it. I do not see myself going into oncology after graduation, but I also did not see myself sitting here either. It tend gets hard to narrow down the topic when there is so much out there. I would like to bring more focus to environmental links associated with inflammatory breast cancer.

Searching CINAHL Plus produced a large number of articles. I refined my search by starting with 2015 to present and peer reviewed journals. This search resulted 1,098 articles. I narrowed the search a little more with inflammatory breast cancer and risk factors with 115 articles resulted.  Pub Med search engine resulted 750 articles for inflammatory breast cancer.  Biomed central produced 53,114 articles as searched by breast cancer. I used breast cancer risk factors and resulted 25,679 articles.

I found the library a bit difficult to use and sort through. There are so many articles that generate which is great, but it seems so overwhelming. It is hard to find an article that pertains to exactly what is being searched. I have personally like google scholar and used that in the past. To me, it was easier to type in what you are looking for and it comes ups rather than having to narrow down by keywords. I think the more I play around with the library, the easier it will be to use and navigate.

CINAHL Plus is the database I liked best. I found the most articles pertaining to my study. It was easy to sort with the years of publication and peer-reviewed journals with just the click of a button.  It was still overwhelming trying to find the “perfect” article but with Walden’s library (n.d.),  I do believe it is possible. I would recommend other nursing professionals to use this database simply because of the ease of navigation but also the fact that is is filled with medical related articles.  In addition to nursing journals, CINAHL Plus offers evidenced-based information from reliable resources.  There are works available that will walk you through the process of searching to make it a  bit easier to understand (Stillwell, et.al., 2010)Understanding Inflammatory Breast Cancer Discussion Paper.

DISCUSSION 2

I plan to bring a focus on the treatment of peri and post-menopausal women to my private practice. I recalled that I recently saw a news piece that the 1970’s study regarding the dangers of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for peri-menopausal and post-menopausal women has been called into question. I set out to find an article on this subject. The article I chose was “The Controversial History of Hormone Replacement Therapy” (Cagnaci & Venier, 2019) which was published in the journal Medicina. Medicina is a Lithuanian journal which does require peer review in order to be published. I chose to read this article so that I may become more acquainted with how the HRT issue became so confusing for women.

Before I commenced my search I went to the Walden University Databases A-Z (n.d.)Understanding Inflammatory Breast Cancer Discussion Paper page to begin to assess what databases were available to me. I began my research by choosing three databases for an initial search with the terms women + HRT. I limited the search to years between 2018-2022. Cinhal Plus with full text yielded 373 articles with 351 being peer-reviewed. PubMed showed  551 with 106 articles have undergone peer review.  Medline with full-text yielded 136 articles with 130 of those being peer-reviewed.

Right away I noticed that Cinhal Plus with Full Text and MedLine had a filter for “peer-reviewed scholarly journals” with additional filters for;  abstract available, all books, publication type, subject matter, publisher, publication, language, age, gender, and geography. While I liked these choices PubMed ultimately won because it was the only database I attempted that offered the option to sort by type of research including review, peer review, meta-analysis, clinical trial, randomized clinical trial, and books and documents.

Before choosing my article I used the weekly resources for this week and linked to Walden University’s Adacemic guides: Verify peer review page (n.d.). Although I have had difficulties with some database inquiries over the previous two weeks I did not have any difficulty with this particular search. In the past, I have undergone searches I felt were broad but yet yielded no results in the database despite the same search yielding results in google scholar. I do feel that PubMed will be a good database for finding scholarly articles for my peers. I anticipate it will be helpful to choose which type of research one wants to reference for scholarly writing.
