A design category I found interesting was the correlational design. This is a research method that examines the relationship between variables without manipulating them. The nursing inquiry problem I would like to study is “In middle-aged adults (P), does effective discharge teaching (I) compared to standard discharge instructions or no specific teaching (C) result in a decrease in the rate of readmissions within 30 days (O)?” As such, experimental research design, specifically a randomized controlled trial (RCT) would be ideal for this study. An RCT involves randomly assigning participants into different groups, in this case, the effective discharge teaching group and the standard discharge instruction or no specific teaching group. The rationale for using an RCT is that it allows for the establishment of causality by comparing the effects of different interventions on the rate of readmissions.
