According to Samra (2003), discipleship is the act of becoming someone’s master, or being educated by a teacher and thus being his/her student. He also say that discipleship is the process of becoming more like Jesus Christ (Matt. 8:21).It mostly involves obeying and following the teachings of a religion, studying religious teachings, participating in its practices and rituals, and striving to embody the principles and values of the faith (Samra, 2003)The Understanding Of Discipleship Essay Paper. In this paper, I will discuss one principle that has been meaningful to me according to the understanding of discipleship and another that I struggle to include when in a discipleship relationship.

In the scripture, the principle that forms my understanding of discipleship is the principle of imitation. Imitation according to my understanding of the scripture is the act of being behaving and doing things like Jesus Christ did, that I imitating His actions while he was on earth (Samra, 2003)The Understanding Of Discipleship Essay Paper. The principle of imitation has been meaningful to me so much because as a believer and a follower of Christ Jesus, I know that I have the responsibility to behave like my master and do what pleases Him as per the scripture. On the other hand, there is one principle that I struggle to include when I am in a discipleship relationship. The cost of being a disciple, whereby Jesus himself tells his twelve disciples that they being His followers would cost them all they possessed, superseding all other relationships(Samra, 2003)The Understanding Of Discipleship Essay Paper. The point whereby the scripture says that discipleship would involve self-denial, suffering and rejection scares me a little bit. I am always in fear of rejection and suffering, therefore I find it hard to embrace this principle of suffering, rejection and self-denial.
