Introduction

In the 21st century, congress has become more of a descriptive representation whereby representation is rooted in race, ethnicity and gender. However, this representation has not fully taken effect as more white men continue representing their people. The number of women and minority groups in congress still faces substantial disproportionality associated with aversion and gender/racial biases. This paper aims to discuss the inequality of women and minorities in congress, its implication and strategies to promote equality in congressional representation.

Equality of Women and Minorities in Congress

The recent congress continues to advocate for racial and ethnic diversity where women and minority populations receive equality in their representation. Nonetheless, the representation of these groups continues to face disproportionately compared to that of the overall U.S population. The non-Hispanic population has an estimated 77% of voting members in congress, which is greater than 60% of the general U.S population. In the House of Representatives, though the representation of Black Americans has increased, it has not reached an equal share with the Native Americans. However, the population is equally represented to their claim as 13% of the House are Black (Schaeffer, 2023)Representation In Congress Assignment Discussion. This has also been experienced in other houses where the groups are less represented relative to their population share. For example, the relative percentage of Hispanics in the U.S is approximately 19%, but in the House, the representation population is 9% (Schaeffer, 2023). Asian Americans and Pacific people account for 6% of the U.S population but are only represented at 3%. According to (Sanbonmatsu, 2020), women are also underrepresented despite being the most significant number in voting. The underrepresentation of these groups has detrimental implications for their livelihood.

Implications of Underrepresentation of Women and Minority Groups

The implication of underrepresentation can be hazardous to the population regarding socio-economic status, healthcare, education and job opportunities. Due to underrepresentation, these groups lack advocacy for economic stability, which limits economic mobility. This, therefore, causes poverty among these groups. Secondly, a lack of advocacy for policies that enhance access to healthcare limits the availability of health coverage and medical care. This causes a disparity in healthcare access for minority groups. Thirdly, underrepresentation creates a barrier to job opportunities and quality education. This is because those in public cannot push for legislation that promotes. Given the implications, strategies must be implemented to promote equality for women and minority groups Representation In Congress Assignment Discussion.

Strategies that can Promote Equity in Representation

A strategy that can help promote equity in representation is advocating for policies promoting these minor groups’ representation. Policies provide guidelines for institutions to achieve long-term goals. In this case, a policy should impose gender and racial quotas to promote adequate gender and racial representation. Secondly, leadership institutions such as Civil and Human Rights can advocate for equal representation of the groups (Minta, 2019)Representation In Congress Assignment Discussion. These institutions influence increasing the presence of minority and women groups in congress. In addition, they can donate to political candidates in their campaigns. These strategies will help these groups gain equity in representation in the senate.
