Topic 8 DQ 2: Relevance of Workplace Initiatives
Programs like the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and Affirmative Action (AA) continue to hold a place in today’s workplace. These legislations, in the search for a better balance in equity and work-life, continue to protect employees from structural injustices by making the proper safeguards available. While society is changing, these laws meet essential needs.
Affirmative action plays an indispensable role in breaking down barriers of institutional and historical obstacles to equal opportunity. For instance, healthcare organizations use AA to span the diversity of their workforce in order to increase cultural competency, thereby extending better patient care (The American Association for Access, Equity, and Diversity, 2019). Due to the criticisms leveled against it, AA regulations are also considered quite important and necessary for most organizations for a level playing field in hiring and employment.
Equally important to supporting employees with significant life transitions, such as childbirth or grave illness, is the Family and Medical Leave Act. Nurses cannot lose their jobs due to recovery from surgery, for example, because of the unpaid leave policy afforded by FMLA (Vohra-Gupta et al., 2020). This protection is essential for employees’ health and well-being, as well as their work-life balance.
Many significant labor demands still find relevance through on-site programs, including those dealing with Affirmative Action and the Family and Medical Leave Act. These laws make for a more considerate and humane workplace in the sense that employees are treated fairly and cared for during times of change in their lives. Their ongoing relevance stands as a testament to the importance of flexible law in meeting the challenging issues of a changing workforce.
