The activities and discussions that I had with my preceptor for the first two weeks of the semester entailed a broad discussion of the entire practicum project and the importance of communicating and collaborating with each other at the workplace. One of the key objectives at the start of the semester was to ensure that I learned the rationale as to why the nurses need effective communication and collaboration in the workplace. Collaboration and effective communication in the workplace help build trust and confidence in the type of care the healthcare personnel provides (Karam et al.,2018). Additionally, effective communication usually results in the designation of effective treatment interventions, which in most cases helps minimize the occurrence of medication errors. The second discussion question was about servant leadership and the various differences that exist between leadership and management. A leader uses his interpersonal skills to influence others toward attaining the organization’s objective. On the other hand, a manager is usually selected by the organization and thus termed to have a legitimate source of power, unlike the leader. The servant-leader usually possesses the mindset of the server first, making it easier to empower and uplift the other individuals (Weiss et al.,2019). Most people believe that power is derived from leadership; apparently, power is grabbed. An influential leader is most likely to have a smooth leadership, unlike the one who has no idea about it. Since I was given the supervisory role, I have always aimed to create a conducive environment where care can be provided effectively. Application of Leadership:

Being in a superior position, unlike the others, means that they would spend most of their time seeking clarification on some concerns since they view you as being more experienced. My preceptor always ensured that his juniors sought clarifications from him before they implemented any form of care to the patient. It is imperative that the power one possesses helps them serve them accordingly. Additionally, the power of influence enabled him to establish sustainable relationships with his employees, and from my observation, this fostered continuous quality care provision. The precept of integrity is also crucial and fundamental to ensuring trust between the public and other healthcare professionals.

My preceptor achieved this by ensuring that he checked in with the patient, informing him that the physician had gone to run some tests and would be back with the results. This fostered healthy therapeutic relationships between the patient that would easily promote healing. Being authentic means that one is real; my preceptor was authentic to the patient as he explained to him how the disease process came about and the various treatment interventions that would slow down the disease pathology. My preceptor was able to attain this by directing on the most suitable course of action that should be taken following the patient’s demise. Practicum Project Preparation:

Before the start of the practicum, my preceptor ensured that I knew the various communication channels and the relation between the operating room desk and the Sterilization department, especially during the weekends when most of the surgeons and the resources are usually deficient. I discussed specific tasks with the preceptor: how an effective communication channel could be implemented to ensure sufficient gauzes and other operating equipment were available. The head of the hospital needed to employ more subordinate staff since there was only one, and he used to get overwhelmed with the work there. Before employing another assistant, the communication tool would guide the surgeons and the Nurses in locating where the gauzes and other essentials are placed.

Duties planned included developing an effective communication tool to ensure that the correct sterile gauzes and dressing packs are selected for the operations. The project I planned to implement to ensure that the issue was improved was the Likert Scale Survey, which would be organized through the Survey Monkey and then shared to the individual emails. The team members will be given a week to respond to the effectiveness of the project, the survey will then be halted, and the employees will be allowed to share their opinions. Based on the responses that I received, there was a need to change the communication channel since most employees did not have a smartphone.
