Concept Analysis Template

Name:

Definition/Explanation of the selected nursing concept:

The selected nursing concept is pain. According to Raja et al. (2020), pain is perceived as an unpleasant emotional and sensory experience linked with potential or actual tissue image. For an individual to experience pain, the peripheral tissues’ nociceptor signals are transmitted to the patient’s spinal cord, the hypothalamus, and the brain’s cerebral cortex. Three defining attributes:

Defining attributes refers to the group of characteristics linked to a certain concept, whereas in concept analysis, these concepts possess more attributes. In that regard, Raja et al. (2020) accentuates that the pain concept has several critical attributes, which include;

  • The uncomfortable, unpleasant, and distressful experience.
  • A psychological, socio-cultural, and neurophysiological response to painful stimulus.
  • Individualized and unique protective mechanisms that individuals use for self-preservation. Disability and Rehabilitation Assignment Paper

1 Antecedent and 1 Consequence of the concept:

1 Antecedent of the concept

Antecedents refers to the incidents or events that precede a concept identification. According to Nijs et al. (2021), these antecedents are crucial since they enable clinicians to acknowledge more critical attributes of nursing concepts. When reflecting on the concept of pain, there are a variety of antecedents, with painful triggers being the most common. These painful triggers may be related to environmental or personal factors. For instance, painful triggers associated with the environment, like hospitalization, affect the individuals’ ability to cope with pain since they remind the patients about their past painful experiences. Personal, painful triggers affect the individual’s coping mechanism in terms of being anxious or feeling stressed, which makes them feel pain more easily compared to those who have established better means to cope with painful experiences. That is why Nijs et al. (2021) accentuate that female has a higher prevalence of expressing pain since they are sensitive to pain compared to men since most men have established mechanisms to cope with painful instances. 1 Consequence of the concept

Consequences refer to incidents or events due to a particular nursing concept. Hence, one pain concept consequence is pain reaction. According to Nijs et al. (2021), a pain reaction is viewed and interpreted as the individual’s behavior towards pain. In that case, pain behavior is classified as involuntary or voluntary. For instance, voluntary responses to pain include avoiding movements that trigger the pain or changing behaviors that may result in painful ordeals. For involuntary responses, patients may engage in various behaviors that call for attention, particularly for patients with chronic pain, like crying, which may lead to other adverse effects like elevated blood pressure and heart rates. Model Case:

The model case reflects real-life cases that show how a nursing concept is experienced in the real world. The model case concerning pain concept revolves around patient A.J., a female diagnosed with breast cancer. The patient has been undergoing radiation and chemotherapy, but currently, she is recovering from a mastectomy that is three days postoperative. When the nurse gets into A.J.’s room, she finds A.J. crying silently, where she comforts her. Later, the nurse notices that A.J.’s heart rate and blood pressure is elevated and she also seems tense. After establishing a therapeutic relationship, A.J. tells the nurse that she is not okay and that she is concerned about what the husband’s reaction would be after realizing that she underwent a mastectomy. However, the nurse acknowledges her worries and provides pain medication to relieve the postoperative pain. Disability and Rehabilitation Assignment Paper

Theoretical Applications of the Concept:

There are a variety of theories that explain the concept of pain, with the biopsychosocial model being the most effective approach. That is because the theory provides a comprehensive elaboration on pain etiology. According to Mescouto et al. (2020), the biopsychosocial model states that pain occurs due to the complex interactions between sociological, psychological, and biological factors. For instance, the model case study shows that apart from A.J. experiencing pain emanating from mastectomy, which is caused by biological factors, psychological factors like tension may have led to elevated heart rate and blood pressure. Also, sociological factors are expressed when she states that she fears what her husband will think concerning her current condition.

Reflection:

The concept of pain is a crucial consideration in healthcare since it affects the patients, and healthcare professionals must acknowledge better ways to manage pain for their assigned patients. Hence, healthcare providers, particularly nurses, must acknowledge the use of the biopsychosocial model to gain more knowledge and understanding of pain (Cohen et al., 2021). That way, it becomes easy to acknowledge better ways to manage pain. Disability and Rehabilitation Assignment Paper
