As I continue forging to find my niche in the healthcare service, my train of thought continues to wander from one issue to another. Of late, I have been concerned about psychological wellness among health workers concerning increased suicide levels and depression which is seldom adequately addressed. This is an area I plan to traverse in the future. My intervention would be to implement three days a week 8-hour shifts with 10-minute breaks after every two hours with paid time-offs. This will be to relieve work pressure. According to Zaçe et al. (2021), a less stressful work environment is potent in facilitating psychological wellness in nurses. Nurses’ mental health is an issue that has been of much concern for a long time with previous studies showing that the nurses’ work environment is a major precipitating factor and a major predictor of mental health outcomes (Havaei et al., 2021). Based on this assertion, to improve mental health among nurses, there must be a massive improvement in making the work environment less stressful by making it less demanding.
In the assessment of this intervention, a cross-sectional epidemiologic study design would be the most appropriate. The design will adequately show the impact of breaks and fewer work hours on the mental wellness of nurses. Based on the findings, policies on mental health among health workers may be formulated. This study design is relatively cheap compared to the other designs. It allows the assessment of the impact of several variables in a snapshot (Aggarwal & Ranganathan, 2019). The findings based on this design may be analyzed to create new theories and hypotheses that may inform in-depth studies. This design also readily and easily approves or disapproves assumptions. It is however marred with a few challenges. This design is not useful in analyzing patterns over some time (Wang & Cheng, 2020). The design cannot be used to show the cause-effect relationship. Cross-sectional studies are prone to bias. The bias could emanate from a researcher’s conflict of interest or the data obtained at a particular time may not be representative of the whole.
