The COVID-19 response presents us with a unique opportunity to talk about inter-governmental relations.

Since the pandemic began, both federal and state governments have been faced with major decisions concerning the country’s public health – acquiring Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers, mandating mask requirements, business closure orders, occupancy reductions, etc.  The ensuing patchwork of policy and mandates showcase the good and bad of concurrent authority in a cooperative federalism system.  For Discussion #5, I want you to answer ONE of the questions below:

1. How has the federal government’s response been different than your state’s response to the pandemic? What are the consequences (good or bad) when the federal government and state government differ on how best to handle this public health crisis?
