Topic 3 DQ 2
Culture and Health Literacy.
Today and over the years, the issue of culture has become a major topic of discussion in matters of health and health literacy. People from different backgrounds practice different cultures which influence their perception of health, illness, body, and interaction with other people (Hughson et al., 2018). Additionally, culture also influences communication which is paramount in health literacy. Health literacy is an integral component that allows for communication and mutual understanding between care providers and patients and influences how individuals make decisions regarding their health (O’Conor et al., 2020). Cultural beliefs determine how people adopt health literacy, think about their health, perceive health interventions, health-seeking behavior, treatment adherence, and respond to recommendations for disease prevention and lifestyle changes. One scenario where cultural impact is the case of immigrants with communication barriers and diverse cultural diversity. For instance, the diversity in culture may choice of treatment as some may prefer traditional medicine to seek help from a health facility (Hughson et al., 2018). Additionally, some religious belief condemns some interventions and procedure. An example is faithful believers from the Jehovah’s Witness faith who are against blood transfusion and related procedures.
Presumably, culture impacts health literacy and individual perception. Adopting measures to improve health literacy and overcoming barriers set by culture is essential to the improvement of population health. Empowering healthcare providers to be culturally competent, understand the needs of patients, educate patients, and provide holistic care can help in overcoming cultural barriers (O’Conor et al., 2020). In addition, institutions should employ diversity training, enhance clear communication, and encourage the employment of individuals from various cultures who understand the needs of the community (Polster, 2018). This will help in improving health literacy among cultural groups thus improving interaction and communication between care providers and patients resulting in the proper adoption of preventive and health promotion activities among people from diverse cultures. As a result, health outcomes and satisfaction will improve
