The core competencies are the unique, core abilities required in fulfilling the advanced practice nursing (APN) roles. In fact, they help in establishing a foundation for education curriculum as they determine what abilities a nurse would need to provide comprehensive care that meets the diverse and complex needs of patients. As a nurse, I am challenged on how I can contribute to the society as a professional. I am expected to take the professional responsibility of continuously providing direct care to patients, supporting their activities of daily living, and protecting individual lives. Accomplishing this requires that I have the nine identified nursing competencies and utilize them in daily practice. My understanding of these competencies is that they are abilities acquired through learning and experience. They are a motivation to exhibit my usefulness as a nurse, and potential abilities that would work effectivities under certain circumstances. In addition, they are behavioral characteristics based on my experiences and interests influenced by my attitude and motivation (Fukada, 2018)Infographic Map Activity Assignment Paper. In this respect, the nine competencies are the optimal behavioral traits that likely lead to achievements.

The nine competencies are aligned with the APN roles and concepts. First, scientific foundation competency focuses on analyzing and using data that can help in assessing, enhancing and improving health care delivery, thereby emphasizing use of evidence-based approaches that leverage qualitative and quantitative research. Second, leadership competency focuses on professional advocacy, scholarship and accountability to ensure that practice is within the scope and standards of practice, and deliver on communication skills, engaging professional organizations and cultural sensitivity. Third, quality competency emphasizes research assessment and application in improving health outcomes as an APN needs to access, assess and apply up-to-date data while considering how it impacts health care access, safety and cost. Fourth, practice inquiry competency focuses on the ability to apply research to clinical settings with a focus on understanding research materials and translating the material into practice while leveraging critical thinking skills to positively impact health outcomes. Fifth, technology and information literacy competency focuses on incorporating technology advances to improve patient outcomes. Sixth, policy competency looks at guidelines that affect nursing practice through determining resource allocations. Seventh, home delivery system competency focuses on planning, developing and implementing programs within the various target communities to address their needs as patients, providers and other stakeholders. Eighth, ethics competency that focuses on understanding the code of ethics, ethical implications of decisions made, and effect on care delivery to include navigating medical community dilemmas and making the best decisions. In reviewing the APN mind map (see Figure 1), with a focus on the role development as well as the core competencies, there are strengths and challenges that come to mind and have significant effect on the role development. Towards this end, five strengths come to mind. First, time management skills as there are times when developing the APN role would feel overwhelming, especially when there are a lot of activities to undertake. With that said, to be a successful APN requires that I strengthen my time management skills. Second, honesty and trustworthiness in handling any errors and mistakes. This is important for correcting mistakes, learning from them, and putting measures in place to prevent reoccurrence. Third, reliability and flexibility in ensuring that patients receive the necessary care even if that means working overtime or on my days off, or working in a different shift or department (Chau et al., 2022)Infographic Map Activity Assignment Paper. Fourth, empathy and compassion, especially when encountering psychological and physical issues. As a nurse, there is a need to interact with patients effectively, helping them cope with the different emotions, showing them care, trying to understand them, and helping them cope with their concerns. Fifth, communication and people skills in speaking effectively with others and understanding what others are communicating (Moudatsou et al., 2020).

In addition to the five strengths, three challenges emerge in the role development. First, role stress in terms of facing increased role performance demand as the transition to APN role involves acquiring an advanced degree and taking on additional work responsibilities while maintaining work and family responsibilities. Second, role stressors in terms of factors that introduce stress to include academic, personal and financial demands, as well as unpredictable, excessive, conflicting and ambiguous role expectations. Nurse Practitioner Core Competencies

The NONPF’s core competencies ensure that nursing programs provide aspiring NPs with the necessary training for the field. Each of the competencies applies to all NPs, regardless of their specialization and population foci.

1 | Scientific Foundation Competencies

Scientific foundation competencies focus on the analysis and use of data that can help assess, enhance, and improve healthcare delivery. It emphasizes evidence-based care using both qualitative and qualitative research.

The quality competency emphasizes the assessment of research and how it can help improve health outcomes. NPs need to access, assess, and apply the most up-to-date data while considering how cost, safety, and access to healthcare impact the quality of care.

Nurses must evaluate current policies and organizational structures to determine if and how they can increase the quality of care by making systematic changes.

The quality core competency includes the following objectives and expectations:

Use the best available evidence to continuously improve the quality of clinical practice.

Evaluate the relationships between access, cost, quality, and safety and their influence on healthcare.

The practice inquiry core competency includes the following objectives and expectations:

With the constant development of new technologies, NPs must be able to incorporate these advances to improve patient outcomes. Using new technology to access, manage, create, and evaluate health-related information allows them to practice more efficiently. NPs who integrate nursing and communication technology (informatics) can potentially increase the effectiveness of their care.

The technology and information literacy core competency includes the following objectives and expectations:

6 | Policy

Healthcare policy refers to the guidelines used to oversee and fund decisions related to patient care. These policies ultimately determine the allocation of resources at the local, state, or federal levels.

Knowledge of various policies helps prepare nurses to influence legislation that can better the healthcare system and their patients. These policies are not solely geared directly toward healthcare, as social issues such as education, poverty, and violence also have an impact on the medical community.

The policy core competency includes the following objectives and expectations:

Demonstrate an understanding of the interdependence of policy and practice.

Advocate for ethical policies that promote access, equity, quality, and cost.

Analyze ethical, legal, and social factors influencing policy development.

7 | Home Delivery System

This focuses on teaching nurses how to plan, develop, and implement programs within various target communities. Nurses learn how to develop appropriate methods of healthcare delivery that can address the needs of patients, providers, and other stakeholders.

After determining the needs of various populations, nurses collaborate with communities in addressing the improvements needed to deliver effective and efficient care.

The health delivery system’s core competency includes the following objectives and expectations:

Analyze organizational structure, functions, and resources to improve the delivery of care.

Collaborate in planning for transitions across the continuum of care.

8 | Ethics

The ethics competency provides NPs with the ability to understand the code of ethics within the healthcare community. NPs must consider the ethical implications of their decisions and assess how it affects their delivery of care. This knowledge helps ensure NPs can navigate the dilemmas within the medical community, allowing them to make the best decisions for their patients.

The ethics core competency includes the following objectives and expectations:

Integrate ethical principles in decision-making.

Evaluate the ethical consequences of decisions.

Apply ethically sound solutions to complex issues related to individuals, populations, and systems of care.

9 | Independent Practice

The independent practice competency ensures NPs have the necessary academic and professional training to work as licensed independent practitioners. The competency ensures that nurses can provide all of the services permitted by law. These services include assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients with minimal direction, oversight, or supervision.

Independent or supervised practice is mandated by the state in which the NP works. States allow for either full practice, reduced access, or restricted access. Full practice states allow NPs to diagnose, treat, and prescribe medication without physician oversight. Reduced access requires physician oversight to prescribe medication. Restricted access requires physician oversight to diagnose, treat, and prescribe medication.

Mind Map: APN and ANP

Advanced practice nursing (APN) and advanced nursing practice (ANP) are two distinct nursing qualifications. In fact, they are resultant of nursing education that has evolved from information training to formal training, certification and licensure. Nursing education has evolved to include Master’s and PhD levels of education. In this case, an ANP is a practicing caregiver trained to provide care in a medical role, such as geriatric caregiver, pediatric nurse, family nurse consultant, and adult nurse practitioner. ANP act as clinical leaders and have the freedom and authority to act autonomously in assessing, diagnosing and treating patients with multidimensional problems. Similar to an ANP, an APN requires at least post graduate level of education that could be a Master’s or a PhD. That is because APN are equipped with superior instructive and medical knowledge, scope of operation, and proficiencies. An APN has expanded tasks in management of individuals and groups. The current professional identification of APN and ANP is unnecessary. That is because they both have post-graduate level of education and enabled to diagnose and treat patients’ diseases in approaches that were previously limited to physicians. Both the APN and ANP are excellently prepared nurses who are critical to the current health care environment as they generate processes, improve policies and tackle complex problems (Zaccagnini & Pechacek, 2019).

APN has its roots back in the 1890s, although ANP has a more recent history in the 1960s as a response to unmet health care needs of populations in rural areas. There are four main types of APN roles: clinical nurse specialists, certified registered nurse anesthetists, certified nurse practitioners, and certified nurse midwives. Each of the four roles require at least a Master’s degree in addition to appropriate licensing and certification. They are trained and educated on specific core competencies with the learning domains including leadership, professionalism, health care technologies, informatics, system-based practice, interprofessional practice, safety, quality, scholarship for nursing discipline, population health, person-centered care, and knowledge of practice (Zaccagnini & Pechacek, 2019).

APNs play a critical role in providing health care access to the public, especially among underserved populations and those in rural areas. In addition, they enjoy autonomy and professional parameters in providing health care to patients. APNs have higher education and advanced training. They allows them to enjoy autonomy that reflects towards providing medical care to the extent of their training.
