The core competencies are the unique, core abilities required in fulfilling the advanced practice nursing (APN) roles. In fact, they help in establishing a foundation for education curriculum as they determine what abilities a nurse would need to provide comprehensive care that meets the diverse and complex needs of patients. As a nurse, I am challenged on how I can contribute to the society as a professional. I am expected to take the professional responsibility of continuously providing direct care to patients, supporting their activities of daily living, and protecting individual lives. Accomplishing this requires that I have the nine identified nursing competencies and utilize them in daily practice. My understanding of these competencies is that they are abilities acquired through learning and experience. They are a motivation to exhibit my usefulness as a nurse, and potential abilities that would work effectivities under certain circumstances. In this respect, the nine competencies are the optimal behavioral traits that likely lead to achievements.
The nine competencies are aligned with the APN roles and concepts. First, scientific foundation competency focuses on analyzing and using data that can help in assessing, enhancing and improving health care delivery, thereby emphasizing use of evidence-based approaches that leverage qualitative and quantitative research. Second, leadership competency focuses on professional advocacy, scholarship and accountability to ensure that practice is within the scope and standards of practice, and deliver on communication skills, engaging professional organizations and cultural sensitivity. Third, quality competency emphasizes research assessment and application in improving health outcomes as an APN needs to access, assess and apply up-to-date data while considering how it impacts health care access, safety and cost. Fourth, practice inquiry competency focuses on the ability to apply research to clinical settings with a focus on understanding research materials and translating the material into practice while leveraging critical thinking skills to positively impact health outcomes. Fifth, technology and information literacy competency focuses on incorporating technology advances to improve patient outcomes. Sixth, policy competency looks at guidelines that affect nursing practice through determining resource allocations. In reviewing the APN mind map (see Figure 1), with a focus on the role development as well as the core competencies, there are strengths and challenges that come to mind and have significant effect on the role development. Towards this end, five strengths come to mind. First, time management skills as there are times when developing the APN role would feel overwhelming, especially when there are a lot of activities to undertake. With that said, to be a successful APN requires that I strengthen my time management skills. Second, honesty and trustworthiness in handling any errors and mistakes. This is important for correcting mistakes, learning from them, and putting measures in place to prevent reoccurrence. Third, reliability and flexibility in ensuring that patients receive the necessary care even if that means working overtime or on my days off, or working in a different shift or department (Chau et al., 2022)Infographic Map Activity Assignment Paper. Fourth, empathy and compassion, especially when encountering psychological and physical issues. As a nurse, there is a need to interact with patients effectively, helping them cope with the different emotions, showing them care, trying to understand them, and helping them cope with their concerns. In addition to the five strengths, three challenges emerge in the role development. First, role stress in terms of facing increased role performance demand as the transition to APN role involves acquiring an advanced degree and taking on additional work responsibilities while maintaining work and family responsibilities. Second, role stressors in terms of factors that introduce stress to include academic, personal and financial demands, as well as unpredictable, excessive, conflicting and ambiguous role expectations. Healthcare policy refers to the guidelines used to oversee and fund decisions related to patient care. These policies ultimately determine the allocation of resources at the local, state, or federal levels.
Knowledge of various policies helps prepare nurses to influence legislation that can better the healthcare system and their patients. These policies are not solely geared directly toward healthcare, as social issues such as education, poverty, and violence also have an impact on the medical community.

8 | Ethics
The ethics competency provides NPs with the ability to understand the code of ethics within the healthcare community. This knowledge helps ensure NPs can navigate the dilemmas within the medical community, allowing them to make the best decisions for their patients.

9 | Independent Practice
The independent practice competency ensures NPs have the necessary academic and professional training to work as licensed independent practitioners. The competency ensures that nurses can provide all of the services permitted by law. These services include assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients with minimal direction, oversight, or supervision.
Independent or supervised practice is mandated by the state in which the NP works. States allow for either full practice, reduced access, or restricted access. Full practice states allow NPs to diagnose, treat, and prescribe medication without physician oversight. Reduced access requires physician oversight to prescribe medication. Mind Map: APN and ANP
Advanced practice nursing (APN) and advanced nursing practice (ANP) are two distinct nursing qualifications. In fact, they are resultant of nursing education that has evolved from information training to formal training, certification and licensure. Nursing education has evolved to include Master’s and PhD levels of education. In this case, an ANP is a practicing caregiver trained to provide care in a medical role, such as geriatric caregiver, pediatric nurse, family nurse consultant, and adult nurse practitioner. ANP act as clinical leaders and have the freedom and authority to act autonomously in assessing, diagnosing and treating patients with multidimensional problems.
