Paul Gauguin’s Spirit of the Dead Watching oil-on-burlap painting of 1892 was inspired by Edouard Manet’s Olympia oil-on-canvas painting of 1863. Manet’s painting (Olympia) presents a nude woman confidently reclining on a bed while wearing nothing except for a black ribbon around her neck, silk flower on her hair, slippers on her feet, and a gold bracelet around her wrist, all symbols of sensuality and wealth. A negro servant is bringing her a bouquet of flowers while a black cat is at the foot of the bed. The woman confidently stares at the painter with a somewhat confrontational and direct gaze. The painting presents nudity as an acceptable and high-minded activity with the courtesan presenting the prosaic and cold reality that she is a low-minded subject (Brettell, 2019)Interdisciplinary Works Essay Assignment.
Gauguin’s painting (Spirit of the Dead Watching) draws inspiration from Manet’s painting in presenting a similar scene. However, there are notable differences between the two paintings. The most notable difference is the subject. While the subject in Manet’s painting is lounging on her back, staring directly at the painter with a defiant gaze while in a relaxed posture, the same cannot be said for Gauguin’s subject who lies on her stomach, partially hides her face, and has an expression of fear. Another notable difference is that Manet’s subject is Caucasian while Gauguin’s subject is Black (Beeny, Groom & Alan, 2019).
Gauguin explains that while he drew inspiration from Manet’s painting, his painting is unique is it presents exotic imagery. Gauguin’s painting has a Black girl lying on her stomach in bed and glancing sideways at the camera. Gaugin reveals that the painting depicts the Polynesian fear of the spirit of the dead who appears as the old woman in a black cloak whom the subject is facing away from. In the painting’s background is several small white forms described as phosphorescent lights that exemplify the interest that spirits take in living people (Bugler, 2021)Interdisciplinary Works Essay Assignment.
