General Format and Document Setup

Basic Format for Papers

There should be 1-inch margins on all sides. Make the whole document, including the title page, headers, and references, double-spaced. Use a font that is easy to read, like Arial (11 pt) or Times New Roman (12 pt).

Title Page

For student papers, start with a cover or title page. It should have: The title of your paper

• Your full name
• Capella University
• Name or number of the course
• Name of the teacher
• Date (Month, Year)
• Use title case for the title. There is no need for a “Running head” label (unless the teacher asks).

Page Number and Page Header

Put a number in the top right corner of each page. You usually don’t need a running head in student papers.If your teacher wants you to have a running head, follow the rules (shortened title in all caps). 

Levels of Headings

Use APA levels of headings to organise your paper.

Level 1: Centred, Bold, and Title Case

Level 2: Bold, Flush Left, and Title Case

Level 3: Title Case, Bold Italic, and Flush Left

Indented, bold, title case, and ending with a period at level 4

Level 5: Indented, Bold Italic, Title Case, and a period at the end

These make it easy for your reader to see the structure at a glance. 

Citations in the Text

Basic Format

If you quote or paraphrase, make sure to include the author’s last name and the year the work was published. Format: (Author, Year)

If you are using a direct quote, please include the page or paragraph number. (Author, Year, p. X)

Many Authors

• Two writers: (Smith & Jones, 2021)
• Three or more: (Brown et al., 2022)
• For the first time, write the full name of the group author; after that, use an abbreviation. libguides.csudh.edu

Quotes in Blocks

• If you quote more than 40 words:
• Put the block quote 0.5 inches from the left margin.
• Don’t use quotation marks

List of References 

Basic Rules

Start a new page with the title “References” in the middle and bold. Put the entries in order by the last names of the authors. Use a hanging indent, with the first line flush left and the rest of the lines indented 0.5 inches. 

Basic Parts of References

For each source, list the following:

1. Author(s)
2. Year of publication
3. Title of work (in sentence case)
4. Source (journal, publisher, URL, or DOI)

Put book and journal names in italics.

• Journal Article: Last, A. A., & Next, B. B. (2020). The name of the article. Journal Name, 12(3), 45–60. https://doi.org/xx.xxx
• Last, A. A. (2019). Book: Book title (7th edition). Publisher.

There are small changes in each version. Use the APA manual or guides for sources that aren’t used very often.
