The hallmark of successful organizations is prominent, driven leaders who are organized, proficient, and driven for success. Great leaders can motivate team members, leadership staff, administration leaders, and other stakeholders to progress and succeed as a team. Healthcare organizations rely on great leaders to meet high standards individually, corporately, and in patient care. As healthcare continually advances and changes, healthcare leaders must also be agile, flexible, and accommodating to rapid change to continue to meet high-quality standards. Additionally, healthcare leaders must be able to adapt to political changes, socioeconomic changes, and environmental changes to meet regulatory and healthcare standards.

With over 19 years in the medical field as a healthcare leader, Ophthalmologist, and Retina Specialist, Dr. Arshad Khanani joined Sierra Eye Associates over ten years ago and established the research department, which is now one of the leading research clinics in the US. Sierra Eye Associates is a private practice focused on patients with vision-threatening eye diseases. The purpose of the practice is to preserve and improve the patient’s vision. As one of the leaders in clinical research, Dr. Arshad Khanani is involved with numerous clinical trials to help develop new drugs and technologies for patients locally and globally.

The mission of Dr. Arshad Khanani, along with Sierra Eye Associates, is to drive the latest innovations and provide cutting-edge treatments to patients. While Sierra Eye Associates is a local private Ophthalmology practice, Dr. Khanani indicates no political influence from political environments. With a primary focus on patients and preserving vision, there are no political influences on the practice due to the primary focus on patient care and improving vision. As a leader in clinical research and new technology, Dr. Khanani is driving change and innovation in Ophthalmic drugs and devices that will positively impact the world should they become approved and made available globally (Wong et al., 2023).

Community Wellness and Needs

Dr. Arshad Khanani is an integral part of the Northern Nevada Ophthalmology community as a leader of change and innovation. Dr. Khanani serves thousands of patients a month and preserves patients’ vision daily. Through referrals and consultations with primary care physicians, neurologists, optometrists, disease specialists, and other retina specialists, Dr. Khanani ensures patients are cared for even outside his practice. Additionally, other physicians who have patients with retina disease refer their patients to Dr. Khanani due to his ability to accommodate emergency patients regularly, and he frequently provides treatment within 24 hours upon consultation in his practice (Khan et al., 2023).

While many Ophthalmology practices are private, they can reject government-funded insurance patients such as Medicaid. Dr. Khanani’s practice accepts Medicaid patients and serves the underprivileged population with Medicaid insurance. Serving the underprivileged allows large families with children in the community to receive high-quality ophthalmic care from Sierra Eye Associates. The majority of Medicaid patients are limited to healthcare provider choices, and servicing Medicaid patients allows them to receive care in a timely fashion from Dr. Khanani and his practice. Sierra Eye Associates is a leader in the field of Ophthalmology/Vitreoretinal in Northern Nevada and serves a large portion of the community one patient at a time, making an impact in the community through vision preservation and improvement (Khan et al., 2023).

Organizational Success Measurements

While the Ophthalmology medicine sector in the Vitreoretinal subspace is primarily referral-based, delivering high-quality care is paramount. Improving patients’ lives through vision preservation and improvement drives the practice’s long-term success. Successful outcomes serve the community well, and patients with positive outcomes will spread the word and bring more patients to the practice. Additionally, referring physicians depend on Sierra Eye Associates to provide urgent Ophthalmic care to patients with vision-threatening conditions. Again, through these referrals, Dr. Khanani can serve patients and referring providers in a swift fashion and provide high-quality care swiftly. Dr. Khanani prides himself on maintaining and improving his patient’s vision daily, a trademark of measured success (Wang et al., 2022).

Organizational and Specific Drivers of Change

Dr. Arshad Khanani always puts patients first and ensures that all patients are treated equally and ethically. The Reno area continues to grow with more people moving to the area, and the healthcare burden also increases. As Dr. Khanani is currently the only retina specialist at Sierra Eye Associates, he plans to acquire more retina specialists in the practice to serve the community better. Acquiring additional retina specialists will assist in serving the community better by allowing more patients to be seen daily. In this case, the drivers of change are the growing community and the need for more retina specialists to serve the ever-increasing population. Specific drivers of change are prioritizing patients and preserving and improving vision.

Effectiveness and Evaluation of Traditional Leadership Models

The healthcare industry is fast-paced and requires agile, flexible leaders who can lead the organization through change management. Change management models offer guidelines to help organizations plan and implement effective change. Several change management models are predominantly used to support and prepare the organization for change. At Sierra Eye Associates, Lewin’s change management model implements and solidifies change. Divided into three distinct steps, Lewin’s change model consists of unfreeze, freeze, and refreeze. In the first unfreeze step, the preparation stage, communication is made to the organization about the initial change phase. In the freeze stage, the second phase, the changes are implemented and put into action. The final stage, the refreeze phase, allows leaders to check in with staff members to ensure the changes are effective and implemented correctly (Phillips & Klein, 2023).
