Overview of the Study

Purpose

The research conducted by Smith-Miller (2022) aimed to explore nurses’ perceptions regarding factors that either hinder or support the integration of research evidence into daily clinical practice. The main goal was to identify organization-specific barriers and facilitators influencing evidence-informed practice, using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) as a guiding model. Understanding these factors was essential for creating clinical environments that enable nurses to apply research-based knowledge effectively in patient care.

Study Design

The study employed a survey-based descriptive design that combined both quantitative and qualitative methods. The quantitative component involved descriptive statistics, internal consistency reliability testing, and inter-item correlation analysis. Meanwhile, qualitative data were gathered through open-ended questions and analyzed using narrative content analysis.

Surveys were distributed electronically and examined for completeness, consistency, and reliability prior to analysis. This mixed-methods approach allowed researchers to capture both measurable data and detailed insights into the barriers and facilitators influencing evidence-informed practice.

Description of the Study

Research Question

What are nurses’ perspectives on the barriers and facilitators to implementing research findings and evidence into practice?

Study Aims

The study aimed to investigate how organizational structures and workplace culture impact evidence-informed practice. Unlike previous studies that primarily focused on nurses’ technical knowledge or skills, this research emphasized the influence of organizational context—including leadership support, workplace culture, and available resources—on the successful adoption of evidence-informed practices.

Sampling Technique, Sample Size, and Characteristics

A modified version of the Barriers to Research Utilization Scale was distributed electronically to nurses working at an academic medical center in the Southeastern United States.

This structured sampling ensured inclusion of diverse nursing roles, leading to a more comprehensive understanding of the clinical environment.

Validity and Reliability

To ensure validity, the survey tool underwent evaluation by two nurse researchers, experienced clinicians, and members of the hospital’s nursing research council. Their feedback verified that all items aligned with the study’s objectives.

Participants’ confidentiality and anonymity were prioritized. Participation was voluntary, and to boost response rates, participants were invited to enter a gift card drawing, with identifying details stored separately from survey data.

Reliability was assessed through psychometric testing, including Cronbach’s α for internal consistency and factor analysis for construct validation. This rigorous validation process enhanced the study’s overall trustworthiness and methodological soundness.

Results of the Study

The study found that nurses generally supported evidence-informed practice but faced numerous barriers, including:

• Lack of sufficient time during shifts to engage with research.

• Limited confidence or knowledge in applying findings to care.

• Organizational fatigue resulting from frequent procedural changes.

• Complex bureaucratic processes that delayed evidence implementation.

In contrast, several facilitators were identified:

• Strong teamwork and collegial support.

• Mentorship and guidance from experienced nurses.

• Access to institutional resources such as online databases and libraries.

These results underscored that while individual motivation is essential, the organizational infrastructure and culture are the most significant factors enabling sustainable evidence-based practice.

Application of the Study Results in Practice

The findings of this study hold important implications for nursing leadership and healthcare management. Nurse leaders and administrators can apply these insights by:

1. Building supportive infrastructure that embeds evidence-based practice (EBP) into daily workflows.

2. Integrating findings into ongoing quality improvement (QI) initiatives consistent with organizational goals.

3. Establishing mentorship programs and continuous training to enhance nurses’ skills in research application.

4. Streamlining bureaucratic procedures to reduce delays in implementing evidence-based changes.

By incorporating these strategies, healthcare organizations can promote a culture of continuous learning and innovation, leading to improved patient outcomes, staff satisfaction, and care efficiency.

If these results are disregarded, organizations risk missing opportunities to strengthen patient safety, employee engagement, and operational performance—highlighting the critical need to translate study findings into practice.
