Background

VFW Post 9999 is the XXX, TX chapter of the Veterans for Foreign Wars. The Post is concerned that its members are not sufficiently involved in Post activities. Since this is a volunteer organization, member involvement is necessary for the continued growth of this chapter.

Research Objective

The objectives of this study are to assess the following:

· Member participation in chapter activities

· Member satisfaction with current activities

· Member preference for volunteering activities

· Preferences for communication about events

The results of this study will be used to improve the chapter’s activities and better serve its members

Research Questions

· Member participation in chapter activities

· Self reported participation in the Post’s activities

· Member satisfaction with current activities

· How satisfied are members with the quality of current activities?

· How important are these activities to the members?

· Member preference for volunteering activities

· How likely are members to volunteer for various committees. These committees include communications & PR; membership; budget; planning

· Preferences for communication about events

· How are members currently receiving information about Post activities?

· What is their preferred medium of communication?

Research Design

A descriptive research design using a web survey will be used for this study. All members have e-mail accounts and the Post has a list of these valid e-mail addresses. Hence, a web survey would be appropriate for this population. The survey will be anonymous and only summary results will be shared with the Post.

The survey will be sent to all current members of the Post. The survey invitation will be sent by the Post’s membership committee. All data will remain with Dr. Raman, Texas Woman’s University and she will share the findings in summary form only at the April meeting of the Post.

Variables

The following variables will be measured in the survey:

· Self reported participation in the Post’s activities: Members will be asked to report on the frequency of their participation.

· Member satisfaction with current activities

· Respondents will be asked to rate their relative satisfaction with the various Post activities

· Respondents will be asked to rate the relative importance of these activities.

· Member preference for volunteering activities

· Respondents will be asked to indicate if they are interested in serving on the Post’s committees. A ranking scale will be used to identify the top three committees they wish to serve on.

· Respondents will be asked to indicate their interest in volunteering with activities that can be performed remotely. These include social media, website maintenance, and communication media design.

· Preferences for communication about events

· Respondents will be asked how they hear about Post events.

· Respondents will be asked about their preferred communication mode.

· Note: Currently, communication with members is by e-mail and announcements at monthly meetings.

Time

Survey invitations will be sent out by the Secretary of the Post. A reminder e-mail will be sent a week later. A third reminder will be sent two weeks after the start of the survey. The survey will remain open for a month.

Limitations & conditions

· All members may not respond to the survey.

· The survey will be submitted to the Membership Committee for final approval.
