Assessment Analysis

Basis of Diagnosis

John has Alcohol Use Disorder (303.90). He has a severe condition with more than six symptoms present. The symptoms include:

  • Frequent substance use
  • Temptation to use
  • Use of substance regardless the negative impact
  • Lack of involvement in activities due to reliance on alcohol
  • Use of alcohol due to failure in accomplishment
  • Lack of participation in activities and important events due to alcohol use
  • Continuation of use despite harmful use

Applicable Theory

The sociocultural model of addiction defines alcohol dependency as social and cultural influences. Sociocultural models include factors such as discrimination, lack of opportunity, and lack of privileged circumstances.

This model is applicable in John’s case. This is because John could not follow his dream career; therefore, he feels at a loss and a failure by society’s standards. John thinks of his current job as a compromise and has lost his enthusiasm. Thus, John turned to alcohol as a stress relief.

Sociocultural Factors

Alcohol is a normal habit in the United States. Thus, it is important to make sure the amount of alcohol consumed is kept under the limit and does not become a habit. For instance, in the case of John, John is unmotivated and feels that his life is over because he is not able to peruse his dream career in sports. Therefore, John feels that he is a failure and turns to alcohol to help with his feelings. Furthermore, John’s wife also consumes excessive alcohol. This means that John and his wife both are dependent on alcohol.

Additionally, sociocultural factors also influence John’s drinking routine. Currently, John is working on a position with his tribe. He is not happy with his job. His work involves helping young adults. As his job is demanding and requires managemental funding planning to get funding. John feels further agitated because he is not able to secure enough funding. This has led to John feeling further demotivated and depending on alcohol to cater to his lost feelings.

Motivation for Change and Relapse Prevention

John requires motivation. The motivation will help John to become willing and plan better for his community by looking for resources and funding. This motivation and determination will be the driving force that will allow John to overcome his drinking dependency. This strategy will encourage John to make positive changes in his life to support his new motivation. Moreover, by following this strategy properly, John will keep his mind occupied. Hence chances for relapse will also be decreased through proper guidance and transformational aims.

The strategy mentioned above is included in the inspirational therapy method. Additionally, motivational interviews can further empower him by boosting John’s self-confidence. Hence, John will have better willpower to change his lifestyle.

Ethical Considerations

NAADAC ensures that ethical considerations are very important. NAADAC also ensures that the highest standards for privacy and confidentiality are met. Additionally, following rigorous training, AUD patients are treated by well-skilled specialists. Interdepartmental collaborations are also encouraged under NAADAC, hence trained medical teams to help patients with alcohol addiction.

Confidentiality

Confidentiality is essential. The healthcare facility should ensure that the patient’s medical records and other sensitive information is handled with security. Considering John, his medical information, such as session conversations with his medical professional help, is sensitive, thus, should be treated with confidentially. Additionally, the vital information should be released to only authorized personnel under well-defined and critical situations, such as when John’s life is in danger. These situations require preapprovals; hence official and adequate protocols should be properly followed.

Appropriate Relationships

Maintaining appropriate relationships in the medical workspace is very important. APA Ethical Code highly discourages personal relationships between patients and medical professionals. Moreover, it is also prevented from treating patients with whom professional medical personnel has had a prior relationship. Recent alterations have detailed that there can be an intimate relationship between patients and medical professionals if there are at least two gaps from the time of treatment. In contrast, the act of intimacy is still considered highly inappropriate in every healthcare environment.

In the case of John, it is essential to remember that John is married. Therefore, a strict line of professionalism should be observed throughout the treatment process of John. Any personal feelings and attachments will create a biased treatment and will affect the outcome (Wang et al., 2022).

It is important to make sure that the boundaries of patients are respected and is ethical. Especially in rehabilitation patients, extra care should be practiced to ensure fairness (Caputo et al., 2022).
