There are various reasons why most leaders in different fields excel or perform poorly in their leadership roles. These reasons are better explained by leadership theories. There exist many leadership theories, where some of these theories emphasizes on the behaviors that people should develop for them to be successful in their leadership roles. There are however other theories that suggest that a person’s characteristics define their leadership capabilities. According to the behavioral theory, there are different learned skills that are attributed to effective and successful leadership. It is a theory that looks at the specific behaviors and actions done by a leader rather than considering their traits. According to the theory, the three essentials that people should have for them to lead others effectively include technical, human and conceptual skills. Finally, the situational leadership theories postulate that different situations have different management styles. The authoritarian and democratic styles are the two common examples of situational leadership management (Lynch et al., 2018).
